Описание: Prior to the Nixon administration, environmental policy in the United States was rudimentary at best. Since then, it has evolved into one of the primary concerns of governmental policy from the federal to the local level. As scientific expertise on the environment rapidly developed, Americans became more aware of the growing environmental crisis that surrounded them. Practical solutions for mitigating various aspects of the crisis - air pollution, water pollution, chemical waste dumping, strip mining, and later global warming - became politically popular, and the government responded by gradually erecting a vast regulatory apparatus to address the issue. Today, politicians regard environmental policy as one of the most pressing issues they face. The Obamaadministration has identified the renewable energy sector as a key driver of economic growth, and Congress is in the process of passing a bill to reduce global warming that will be one of the most important environmental policy acts in decades. The Oxford Handbook of U.S. Environmental Policy will be a state-of-the-art work on all aspects of environmental policy in America. Over the past half century, America has been the world`s leading emitter of global warming gases. However, environmental policy is not simply a national issue. It is a global issue, and the explosive growth of Asian countries like China and India mean that policy will have to be coordinated at the international level. The book will therefore focus notonly on the U.S., but on the increasing importance of global policies and issues on American regulatory efforts. This is a topic that will only grow in importance in the coming years, and this will serve as an authoritative guide to any scholar interested in the issue.

With this book, discover how the peoples of America perceived and changed their environments and, in the process, re-made their politics, culture, and societies.
The thoroughly revised and newly updated Second Edition of American Environmental History delivers a comprehensive exploration of how the peoples of the United States have perceived, and made changes to, the natural world around them. It also describes how nature has changed in response to humanity, from the pre-Columbian era to the present, and how Americans have fought with one another over how best to live in the earth's natural systems.
Accomplished professor and author Louis S. Warren offers readers examinations of crucial topics, including Native American landscapes and relations with nature, virgin soil epidemics, colonial invasion, American slavery through environmental history and the nexus of race and environmental peril, market economies and the destruction of bison, passenger pigeons, whales, and other creatures, industrial development and its hazards, urbanization and calls for pollution control, conservation in the Progressive Era, wilderness and national parks, the rise of environmentalism, the birth of the environmental justice movement, consumerism and its environmental impact, the conservative backlash against environmentalism, and histories of ozone depletion, acid rain, overpopulation, and climate change. This book invites readers to weigh the distinctive experiences of different people--white, Black, and Native American--to environmental change and environmental threats from the colonial period to COVID-19.
You'll benefit from an insightful editorial introduction to each chapter, as well as interpretive interventions that add scholarly value to each reading and document. The author includes selections from amongst the most exciting scholarship and seminal essays on the subject of environmental history in the United States.
American Environmental History, Second Edition provides readers with:

Описание:
The first edition of this pragmatic course text emphasized the policy value of a "big picture" approach to the ethical, political, technological, scientific, economic, and management aspects of environmental issues. The text then applied this approach to real-world case examples involving leaks in underground storage tanks, toxic waste cleanup, and the effects of global climate change.
This second edition demonstrates the ongoing effectiveness of the book's framework in generating meaningful action and policy solutions to current environmental issues. The text adds case examples concerning congestion taxes, e-waste, hydrofracking, and recent developments in global climate change, updating references and other materials throughout and incorporating the political and policy changes of the Obama administration's first term and developments in national and global environmental issues.

Although the Kyoto Protocol, an international agreement to address global climate change, has been regarded by many as an unsuccessful treaty both politically and environmentally, it stands as one of the world's few truly global agreements. Why did such a diverse group of countries decide to sign and/or ratify the treaty? Why did they choose to do so at different times and in different ways? What explains their foreign policy behavior? Amy Below's book builds off the increasing significance of climate change and uses the Kyoto Protocol as a case study to analyze foreign policy decision making in Latin America.
Below's study takes a regional perspective in order to examine why countries in Latin America made disparate foreign policy choices when they were faced with the same decision. The book looks at the decisions in Argentina, Mexico, and Venezuela via a process-tracing method. Below uses information obtained from primary and secondary documents and elite interviews to help reconstruct the processes, and augments her reconstruction with a content analysis of Conference of the Parties speeches by presidents and country delegates. The book complies with convention in the field by arguing that systemic, national and individual-level factors simultaneously impact foreign policy decisions, but makes the additional claim that role theory most accurately accounts for relationships between variables.
Environmental Politics and Foreign Policy Decision Making in Latin America considers a variety of factors on individual, national, and international levels of analysis, and show that the foreign policy decisions are best viewed through the prism of role theory. The book also draws conclusions about the value of role theory in general and about environmental foreign policy decisions in developing countries, which will be of value to both policy-makers and academics.
