Bach's life was a searching for all that was best in his art to refine it in the fire of his genius. -- Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians Bach's mastery of rhythm and harmony, inventiveness, and genius for composition produced some of the richest and most beautiful music of all time. Those qualities are strikingly evident in his early concerti, which are among the most recorded and performed works in the baroque repertoire. This easy-to-read volume reprints, complete and unabridged, the master's seven complete concerti for solo keyboard and orchestra from the renowned Bach-Gesellschaft edition, still considered the primary source for Bach's music. Composed in Leipzig (c. 1735), these elegant works are almost completely based on earlier extant or lost concerti by Bach for violin and wind instruments. The concerti reproduced here in full score include Concerto in D Minor (BWV1052), Concerto in E Major (BWV 1053), Concerto in D Major (BWV 1054), Concerto in A Major (BWV 1055), Concerto in F Minor (BWV 1056), Concerto in F Major (BWV 1057), and Concerto in G Minor (BWV 1058). Musicians, students, and Bach devotees will applaud this clearly printed, wonderfully affordable playing edition of classic compositions by the supreme master of the baroque.
This volume brings together a wide selection of Bach's keyboard compositions, including many pieces difficult to find in other editions. Included are several well-known works: the important harpsichord toccatas, the Capriccio on the Departure of His Most Beloved Brother, the Aria Variata alla Maniera Italiana, and the Six Little Preludes, as well as many lesser-known but significant pieces -- fugues, sonatas, and other works -- over 40 in all. Reprinted from the authoritative Breitkopf and H rtel edition, the music in this inexpensive yet well-made volume offers pianists a rich selection of interesting works stamped with the melodic and rhythmic invention and harmonic audacity characteristic of Bach.

"One of the most delightful facets of his particular talent is seen in the Fantasies. . . . These Rococo miniatures have a lively opening section with light and clear-textured writing, a brief slow section in homophonic style, and then a return to the initial section." -- Gillespie, Five Centuries of Keyboard Music. Widely regarded as one of the most important German composers of the early and middle eighteenth century, Telemann (1681-1767) was a highly skilled contrapuntist with excellent technical mastery and a fluent command of melody. He was also extremely prolific. According to Handel, he could write a motet in eight parts as easily as anyone else could write a letter. Today, the keyboard works of this early master are being studied, played, and recorded more than ever before. The Fantasias (published 1732-33) are of particular historic interest, for along with their polish, grace, and fluidity, the beginnings of the sonata form are revealed in Telemann's technique of bringing together different motifs. Now all 36 of these graceful, appealing compositions are available in this authoritative edition, ready to challenge and delight keyboard artists with a wealth of freshness, wit, and lighthearted style galant.
"His melodic imagination displays admirable freshness. He possesses a delicate harmonic sense. His themes show the inspirations of an impassioned musician: perfectly created, firm in line, vivid, and enduring in color. His art never wavers; it consistently exhibits a magnificent technique." -- John Gillespie, Five Centuries of Keyboard Music This famous edition, prepared a century ago by Johannes Brahms and Friedrich Chrysander, presents all of the 27 keyboard suites, or Ordres, by the great French composer Fran ois Couperin (1668-1733). Also included are the Allemande and 8 Preludes from Couperin's famous harpsichord treatise, L'Art de Toucher le Clavecin. In these magnificent works (there are over 200 compositions in the two volumes) lies the supreme achievement of French keyboard music, a rich source of subtle, sometimes startling, always pleasurable music for keyboard artists and students at every level of expertise. The moods, rhythms, and melodies of these distinctive compositions range across a broad musical spectrum, from crisp gavottes to noble sarabandes, from flowing allemandes to lively gigues. Some of the pieces suggest carnival merriment, others tender reflection; most have colorful and mysterious names. Couperin's virtuoso command of harpsichord style, his magnificent technique, and ever-fresh melodic imagination pervade them all. Witty, graceful, and tuneful, the keyboard works of Couperin represent a wonderful legacy of late-baroque masterpieces. Beautifully reproduced in this inexpensive edition, they make abundantly clear the justice of Bach's intense admiration for Couperin's music and the aptness of the French master's surname -- "le grand." Note: Series Two contains Ordres 14-27 plus 8 Preludes and Allemande from L'Art de Toucher le Clavecin.

The music historian Sir John Hawkings recorded that his friend Handel's keyboard improvisations "stole on the ear in a slow and solemn progression; the harmony close wrought, and as full as could be possibly be expressed; the passage concatenated with stupendous art, the whole at the same time being perfectly intelligible, and carrying the appearance of great simplicity." Such fecund spontaneity generated the few published pieces Handel wrote specifically for the keyboard. The first set of suites appeared in 1720, perhaps composed and published for the instruction of Princess Anne, to whom Handel serves as music master. Other collections of harpsichord and clavichord work followed; all seem to have been preserved from Handel's freely inventive keyboard sessions. Here, for the first time in a popularly accessible edition, are 35 of his finest keyboard works for solo instruments, reproduced from the monumental Deutsche H ndelgesellschaft edition, still the most complete. This collection features the celebrated Eight Great Suites, including the Harmonious Blacksmith Air and the Passacaille in G Minor (G 255), "a work in which Handel approaches most nearly to the monumental style of his choral writing" (Grove's Dictionary). Other works include: Fugue in A Minor; Fantasia in C Major; Suite (Partita) in G Minor; Sonatina in B-flat Major; Capriccio in F Major; Minuet in G Minor; Sonatas in C Major; Chaconne in F Major; Prelude and Sonata in G Minor; and more. For this new edition, the pieces have been rearranged and retitled according to the latest scholarly sequences found in The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. Students and scholars will find many of the ideas Handel sketched here expanded and reworked in later chamber and orchestral works and in the opera dance movements; musicians and every Baroque music lover will see in these neglected pieces "a Protean fluidity" (New Grove) worthy of the great composer, and more than worthy of any musical library.

Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck (1562-1621) was among the most famous organists of seventeenth-century Europe and an influential composer in the Dutch and North German tradition. He composed over 300 choral and instrumental pieces that bridged Renaissance and Baroque styles and helped prepare the way for the music of Buxtehude, Scheidt, and J. S. Bach. Today, the Dutch composer is best remembered for the inventive, sparkling music he wrote for organ and other keyboard instruments. This remarkable treasury includes nearly all of Sweelinck's brilliant keyboard works, most of which have survived only in widely scattered seventeenth-century manuscripts. Reproduced from a clearly printed, thoroughly edited, and reliable 1943 critical edition, this volume contains important and innovative compositions heretofore difficult to find in a reasonably priced edition. The selections are divided into four principal sections (pieces playable on either organ or other keyboard; pieces for organ; pieces for keyboard; supplementary section) and include chorale variations notable for their double and triple counterpoint; toccatas and fantasias showing the influence of the Venetian organ school; and sets of variations on secular and dance tunes. Moreover, the supplement contains three incomplete and/or modified works and a fascinating, authentic fantasia by the great English composer John Bull. The fantasia was written in memoriam shortly after Sweelinck's death and was based on a now-lost fugue by the Netherlandish master. It remains the only testament to one of Sweelinck's finest works. In Sweelinck's day, the 73 classic compositions presented here were among Europe's most popular pieces for organ and keyboard. In our own time, these lovely instrumental works retain every bit of their original intensity and vigor. Reproduced in this authoritative complete-resource edition, they will be welcomed by serious keyboard artists, who will find them as praiseworthy today as they were when first known and played in Europe over 300 years ago.
