Описание: Dating from 1917 to the end of the Cold War, the posters in this book feature the work of groundbreaking Russian artists such as El Lissitzky and Alexander Rodchenko, as well as extraordinary anonymous work. Presented in full colour and printed on heavy paper in a large-format, the posters gathered here represent the pinnacle of Russian avant-garde design from the 20th century. They range in theme from the dangers of alcohol abuse and the creeping Nazi menace to illustrations of utopian harmony and the Soviet industrial machine. A special feature of this book allows for the removal of the posters for display or framing. A brief introduction offers a chronological overview of the period that produced such eloquent art, which has long been a major source of inspiration to artists and designers alike.
Описание: Published for the first time in a single volume, this definitive collection of original posters produced by Andy Warhol reveals the artist’s remarkable contribution to the art of poster design.
Throughout his career, Andy Warhol easily crossed the boundaries between fine art and graphic design; in fact, he made no distinction between art and advertising. Posters were a natural medium for this talented artist, and he was much in demand to promote some of the most renowned celebrities, causes, and brands of his time. This richly illustrated catalogue raisonne surveys every Warhol poster commissioned for a specific purpose and featuring original artwork. Arranged chronologically, they present a fascinating array of subjects, including cultural events, musicians, politics, and iconic brands. Each of the posters is exquisitely reproduced, including some with multiple variations, and accompanied by informative texts and comparative illustrations. The author’s introductory essay offers a brief history of poster art and contextualizes Warhol’s output against masters of the form such as Henri de Toulouse- Lautrec and Keith Haring. Seen in their entirety, these posters— bearing all the hallmarks of the artist’s finest work—both reflect and reveal the cultural zeitgeist that drove Warhol’s innovative practice.

Описание: Roy Lichtenstein's art is most recognizable for its trademark Benday dots and two-dimensional planes, cartoon-like qualities that placed him at the forefront of the American Pop Art scene. With its heavy emphasis on America's consumer culture, Lichtenstein's style lends itself easily to the poster genre. This volume opens with his earliest poster, designed for his first exhibition at the Leo Castelli gallery in 1962, and closes with his last, which he completed in the year of his death. An additional section features reproductions from the Claus von Olden collection and includes posters and flyers that were produced all over the world using Lichtenstein's iconic motifs. The works reflect Lichtenstein's prolific imagination and ability to adapt his vision to the promotion of music and film festivals, theatrical performances, museums, restaurants, public service messages, as well as his own exhibitions. An essay by Jurgen Doring expounds upon Lichtenstein's development as an artist who blurred the boundaries between low- and high-brow art. The book also includes an illustrated biography of the artist.

Описание: Over the course of the Edo period (1600–1868), an extraordinarily large quantity of paintings, prints and illustrated books with sexual and erotic themes was produced in Japan. As urban culture expanded rapidly during the seventeenth century, erotic material was a major genre of woodblock print production. These constitute some of the finest examples of art-printing in Japan, employing deluxe materials and special printing effects. This book looks at pictures by some of the most renown artists, such as Kitagawa Utamaro and Katsushika Hokusai, who produced erotic imagery as a standard part of their work. When creating erotica, artists often played on sexual situations in everyday life: a wife catches her husband having sex with a maid, mice start copulating in imitation of humans. Erotic encounters in Edo-period woodblock prints reflect multiple perspectives – male, female, heterosexual and homosexual. Japanese erotic art is also notable for its tone of humour, much more so than in Western representations of sex. There was also frequent recourse to satire and parody, often in defiance of contemporary censorship and sumptuary regulations.
Описание: Japanese graphic design for advertising boasts a tradition like that of no other country in terms of age, inventive, colour, drawing and, of course, calligraphy, with Latin, Chinese and Japanese characters nearly always appearing side by side. The abundance of signs and colours and the eurhythmy of images and words in these posters all draw on ancient tradition but are also clearly projected into the future, and nearly always ahead of the times. The catalogue illustrates the most significant works produced over the last ten years by both the great masters and younger talents. It includes posters selected by a committee comprising the two masters of contemporary graphic design Kazumasa Nagai and Shin Matsunaga, who also designed the cover.

Описание: In the age of the internet, poster art is fading into history, but its importance as historical document remains valuable and enlightening. An inexpensive and efficient means of mass communication, the poster was used extensively by Communist regimes in order to maintain state control. This collection of 150 of the most outstanding works from a selection of more than 10,000 posters archived by the German Historical Museum features works that are both poignant and valid in light of current global politics. Although propaganda posters were used in a variety of communist countries, those that emanated from East Germany are unique in their subtlety and nuanced messages. Many posters appropriate American or Western European symbols and others used humour to get their point across. Grouped chronologically according to such themes as post-war years, the prospect of peace, denouncement of the West, and praise for Communist allies, these beautifully reproduced works provide a historical and cultural snapshot of East Germany during its entire history.
