Описание: With students of Physics chiefly in mind, we have collected the material on special functions that is most important in mathematical physics and quan- tum mechanics. We have not attempted to provide the most extensive collec- tion possible of information about special functions, but have set ourselves the task of finding an exposition which, based on a unified approach, ensures the possibility of applying the theory in other natural sciences, since it pro- vides a simple and effective method for the independent solution of problems that arise in practice in physics, engineering and mathematics. For the American edition we have been able to improve a number of proofs; in particular, we have given a new proof of the basic theorem ( 3). This is the fundamental theorem of the book; it has now been extended to cover difference equations of hypergeometric type ( 12, 13). Several sections have been simplified and contain new material. We believe that this is the first time that the theory of classical or- thogonal polynomials of a discrete variable on both uniform and nonuniform lattices has been given such a coherent presentation, together with its various applications in physics.

Part VI is devoted to Green's functions, both for ordinary differential equations and in multidimensional spaces. Parts VII and VIII contain a thorough discussion of differential geometry and Lie groups and their applications, concluding with Noether's theorem on the relationship between symmetries and conservation laws.

Intended for advanced undergraduates or beginning graduate students, this comprehensive guide should also prove useful as a refresher or reference for physicists and applied mathematicians. Over 300 worked-out examples and more than 800 problems provide valuable learning aids.

Описание: In this work we show that Non-equilibrium Green’s Function Perturbation Theory (NEGF) is really the overarching perturbative transport theory. It is developed in 3 directions: Landauer-like theory, kinetic theory and Green-Kubo linear response theory. This work generalizes the 2 directions of Landauer-like theory and the kinetic theory. Firstly, NEGF is used to derive phonon-phonon Hedin-like functional derivative equations which generates conserving self energy approximations for phonon-phonon interaction. Secondly, for the Landauer-like theory, using the perturbation expansion, we obtain anharmonic corrections to the ballistic energy current and to the noise associated to the energy current. Along a seperate line, we incooperate high mass disorder into the ballistic energy current formula. The coherent potential approximation (CPA) is found to be compatible with the ballistic energy current expression. Lastly, for the kinetic theory, Wigner coordinates + gradient expansion easily allow the derivation of phonon-phonon correlation corrections to kinetic equations. The main feature of this work is the extremely detailed mathematical explanations.
