Описание: Abstract This chapter defines food security as the condition reached when a nation's population has access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food to meet its dietary needs and food preferences. It stresses China's importance to global food security because of its population size. The chapter introduces the contents of the volume and then treats briefly food security in ancient and dynastic (211 bc-1912) China. It examines environmental stressors, such as population growth, natural disasters, and insect pests as well as imperial responses (for example, irrigation, flood control, storage and transportation systems). The chapter also briefly int- duces the Republican era (1912-1949) and compares environmental stressors and government responses then to those of the imperial period. Keywords Food system - Food security - Food production regions - Environmental stressors (Population growth - Natural disasters - Insect pests and Plant diseases - Deforestation - Climate change) - Irrigation systems - Flood control - Grand Canal 1. 1 The Problem of Food Security and Environmental Change Food is the material basis to human survival, and in each nation-state, providing a system for the development, production, and distribution of food and its security is a primary national objective. Many forces have influenced the food security of peoples since ancient times, with particular challenges from natural disasters (floods, famines, drought, and pestilence) and growing populations globally.

Описание: This bookprovides an in-depth analysis of the wheat production developments in theEurasian region and assesses the potential contribution of the region todomestic and international food security. In particular, the book covers policyand institutional developments of the agricultural sector in Eurasia with aspecial focus on the horizontal issues relevant to the current and futurepotential growth of the wheat production, such as land policy, credit andfinance, privatization, farm restructuring, and environmental challenges.Global foodsecurity is a major societal concern in the light of an increasing population, which is projected to grow from around seven billion today to almost 10 billion in2050. Two most likely ways to achieve the much needed food production growthare: expansion of land cultivation or increase in crop yields and total factorproductivity. The only region with a significant amount of uncultivated arableland that is at the same time experiencing rising agricultural productivity isthe “Eurasian wheat belt,” comprising of Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and theCentral Asian countries (Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Kirgizstan). This makes the region a potential hotspot for driving the future growth ofglobal agriculture. Such prospects require a detailed investigation ofEurasia’s future perspectives in terms of food production (with a focus onwheat) and its potential contribution to regional and global food security.

Описание: This book examines the public stockholding policies of selected developing countries from the perspective of WTO rules and assesses whether the provisions of the Agreement on Agriculture (AoA) could hamper these countries’ efforts to address the challenges of food security. Further, it highlights the need to amend the provisions of the AoA to make WTO rules just and fair for the millions of people suffering from hunger and malnutrition in developing countries. This book highlights that 12 countries namely China, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Kenya, Morocco, Pakistan, Tunisia, Turkey, Zambia and Zimbabwe are facing or will face problems in implementing the food security policies due to the provisions under AoA. These provisions need to be amended for permitting developing countries to address hunger and undernourishment. Progress in WTO negotiations on public stockholding for food security purposes are also discussed and analysed. The findings of this study greatly benefit trade negotiators, policymakers, civil society, farmers groups, researchers, students and academics interested in issues related to the WTO, agriculture and food security.
