Описание: Michel Foucault takes us into the first two centuries of our own era, into the Golden Age of Rome, to reveal a subtle but decisive break from the classical Greek vision of sexual pleasure. He skillfully explores the whole corpus of moral reflection among philosophers (Plutarch, Epictetus, Marcus Aurelius, Seneca) and physicians of the era, and uncovers an increasing mistrust of pleasure and growing anxiety over sexual activity and its consequences.

Описание: With the publication of Michel Foucault's last essays detailing his account of the aesthetics of existence and a post-metaphysical ethics, we now have an outline for a comprehensive Foucaultian analytical framework. Foucault's analytical schema is arranged around three interdependent observations. First, subjects are formed through discursive and material force relations that Foucault calls disciplinary power. Second, while individuals inescapably bear the inscription of disciplinary power, there are multiple sites of resistance available to them. And third, the normative purpose of resistance and life is found in the self-conscious pursuit of aesthetic transformation and self-creation-what Foucault calls ethics. For Foucault, philosophy, critique, and writing are agonistic and creative tools in the practice and cultivation of what he calls the 'art of life.' In Franz Kafka and Michel Foucault: Power, Resistance, and the Art of Self-Creation, Nicholas Dungey examines Foucault's holistic project and applies it to a critical interpretation of Kafka's writings. In Part I, Dungey argues that in Kafka's, "In the Penal Colony," and The Trial, we find evidence of the presence and operation of disciplinary power, strategies, and forms of subjectivity. "In the Penal Colony" and The Trial exhibit the central themes of Foucault's dystopian analysis of Enlightenment rationality, subjectivity, and politics. In Part II, Dungey moves from a genealogical analysis of disciplinary power and subjectivity in Kafka's literature to an examination of Foucault's account of resistance, the aesthetics of existence, and ethics. Turning to Kafka's voluminous letters and diary entries, Dungey identifies the way Kafka's letters and diaries operate as strategies of resistance against disciplinary norms and expectations and ultimately serve as the artistic vehicle through which Kafka pursued a form of aesthetic self-creation he called life as literature.

Описание: Here, one of France`s greatest intellectuals explores the evolving social, economic and political forces that have shaped our attitudes to sex. Foucault describes how we are in the process of making a science of sex which is devoted to the analysis of desire rather than the increase of pleasure.
Drunken and debauched husbands; libertine wives; vagabonding children. These and many more are the subjects of requests for confinement written to the king of France in the eighteenth century. These letters of arrest (lettres de cachet) from France's Ancien R gime were often associated with excessive royal power and seen as a way for the king to imprison political opponents. In Disorderly Families, first published in French in 1982, Arlette Farge and Michel Foucault collect ninety-four letters from ordinary families who, with the help of hired scribes, submitted complaints to the king to intervene and resolve their family disputes.
Gathered together, these letters show something other than the exercise of arbitrary royal power, and offer unusual insight into the infamies of daily life. From these letters come stories of divorce and marital conflict, sexual waywardness, reckless extravagance, and abandonment. The letters evoke a fluid social space in which life in the home and on the street was regulated by the rhythms of relations between husbands and wives, or parents and children. Most impressively, these letters outline how ordinary people seized the mechanisms of power to address the king and make demands in the name of an emerging civil order.
Arlette Farge and Michel Foucault were fascinated by the letters' explosive qualities and by how they both illustrated and intervened in the workings of power and governmentality. Disorderly Families sheds light on Foucault's conception of political agency and his commitment to theorizing how ordinary lives come to be touched by power. This first English translation is complete with an introduction from the book's editor, Nancy Luxon, as well as notes that contextualize the original 1982 publication and eighteenth-century policing practices.
