Описание:

This book explores current patterns in marriage and shows that even with changes in marriage and family, nearly all Americans still marry at some point in their lives and when they marry, they behave much like other married people. From getting engaged to breaking up, people follow established and predictable patterns of behavior. Revisiting a wide range of qualitative and quantitative data, Yodanis and Lauer show how the institution of marriage continues to constrain options within and outside of marriage.

Why, especially in a time of increasing options, do people still keep, honor, and obey the institution of marriage? The answer in a sociological perspective and key sociological theories. The lack of innovation in who and when individuals marry and how they live and interact within marriage comes from the continuing formal and informal rules and taken for granted expectations of marriage. The influence of these rules and expectations is so strong that attempts at innovation and alternatives to marriage, including remaining single, cohabitation, same sex marriage, and communes, are shaped and constrained by the institution of marriage. The authors show how our private relationships are public issues.

Описание: In Family and the Politics of Moderation , Lauren K. Hall argues that the family is a fulcrum upon which societal values balance. Hall describes a set of intermediate institutions that hold the power to alter polarized political and cultural views--churches, religious institutions, local governments, social organizations, and importantly, the family. For Hall the family moderates between broad collectivity and strict individualism. She contends that the family as an intermediate entity wields the strength to guide society between extreme viewpoints, be they social, political, or cultural. Family and the Politics of Moderation thus generates an imperative to ensure the survival of the family as an integral pillar of society.
