Описание: Major writers through the centuries have turned their minds to the subject of books, often with humour, sometimes with exasperation, always with affection. This essential anthology for bibliophiles offers a rich selection of musings on the virtues of libraries, books and `the pleasant smell of paper freshly pressed`.
Описание: The Bodleian Library is home to treasures from every corner of the globe that mark major milestones in cultural history. This book contains twenty-six pull-out postcards--one for each letter of the alphabet--each featuring a rare or beautiful manuscript from the library's outstanding collections. From Shakespeare's First Folio to the Gutenburg Bible, the Magna Carta, an early Jane Austen manuscript, and anatomical drawings by sixteenth-century physician Andreas Vesalius, the works showcased represent the maths, music, medicine, literature, and more. Whether you're one of the more than one million visitors who enjoy a selection of treasures on display at the library each year or a history buff, bibliophile, or dedicated librarian, these beautiful postcards are perfect either to display or send to friends.
Описание: Working from the earliest surviving draft of Frankenstein, Charles E. Robinson presents two versions of the classic novel--as Mary Shelley originally wrote it and a subsequent version clearly indicating Percy Shelley's amendments and contributions. For the first time we can hear Mary's sole voice, which is colloquial, fast-paced, and sounds more modern to a contemporary reader. We can also see for the first time the extent of Percy Shelley's contribution--some 5,000 words out of 72,000--and his stylistic and thematic changes. His occasionally florid prose is in marked contrast to the directness of Mary's writing. Interesting, too, are Percy's suggestions, which humanize the monster, thus shaping many of the major themes of the novel as we read it today. In these two versions of Frankenstein we have an exciting new view of one of literature's greatest works.
Описание: Liturgical psalters are among the most important--and beautifully illustrated-- of medieval Christian books. In their simplest form, psalters included 150 psalms, preceded by a calendar and followed by canticles, or biblical texts, meant to be sung at church services. Though this core content remained relatively unchanged throughout the Middle Ages and across countries, psalters show considerable variation in size, style of presentation, and choice of supplementary texts. Latin Liturgical Psalters in the Bodleian Library describes more than one hundred psalters from Britain, France, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Italy, and Spain, ranging from the ninth to the sixteenth century and reflecting a wide range of requirements and interests. Each entry includes a description of the psalter's contents, physical makeup, and provenance, alongside full-color images of pages, a bibliography, and tables to assist in the study of illumination and the liturgical use of psalms. Bringing together important information on a stunning selection of little-known manuscripts held by the Bodleian Library, this volume will prove a valuable resource.
