Описание: This new volume of Current Topics in Developmental Biology covers endocrine gland development and disease, and with contributions from an international board of authors. The chapters provide a comprehensive set of reviews covering such topics as sex determination & gonadogenesis, hypothalamus, paraythyroid and placenta.
Описание: Brought to you by the same leading endocrinologists responsible for the highly acclaimed two-volume textbook, Endocrinology: Adult and Pediatric, this derivative book presents a compilation of chapters covering all endocrinology material related to parathyroid and bone metabolism.
Описание: This comprehensive ready-reference guide thoroughly examines the physiological aspects of progestins and their role at the receptor level, focusing on
reproductive activity, menopausal treatment, and related areas. The book presents vital research findings on the clinical use of progesterone and related derivatives, plus key
applications of antiprogestins. Illuminates progesterone's remarkable power in hormonal contraception and regulation of the hypothalamo-pituitary complex! Written by more than 25
leading international experts on women's health, "Progestins and Antiprogestins in Clinical Practice" explains the effects of long-term controlled progestin studies on breast tissue;
discusses the nuclear localization of steroid hormone receptors; covers the relationship of CDK activity and cell proliferation; analyzes production of progesterone metabolites and
zed locally within the brain and in the endocrine glands; describes cardiovascular effects associated with combined oral contraceptives (COCs), highlighting carbohydrate and lipid
metabolism and hematological factors.
The book also investigates the epidemiology of estrogen-induced endometrial hyperplasia and/or cancer; demonstrates cases in
which minor structural modifications in some steroid molecules can affect biological function; explores several properties of progesterone and its natural derivatives; illustrates instances
of cloning of the intracellular progesterone receptor (PR) in several species; assesses direct progesterone action in target tissues and indirect effects of progesterone regulation; surveys
properties of widely used contraceptive steroids, such as norethindrone (NET) plus estradiol (E2), levonorgestrel (LNG) plus estradiol (E2), nestorone plus ethinyl estradiol (EE2), and
NET acetate plus EE2; reviews the efficacy and safety of newer contraceptive strategies such as Norplant implants and vaginal rings; covers applications of RU486 (mifepristone) and

Описание: Illustrates that the prostate elaborates an array of local hormones or `autocoids` and how these influence prostatic growth, function and oncogenesis. This title describes how familiarity with these participants and how they effect the character and direction of prostatic function may suggest diagnostic markers of malfunction.

Описание: The critical role of the thymus in the immune system is becoming increasingly well understood. Much of this knowledge is widely dispersed throughout the literature. Although thymectomy is well established as a surgical procedure, these advances need to be made available to the surgeon. Furthermore, neurologists and physicians require a better understanding of the surgical aspects of the thymus. This book, written by selected experts, provides an up-to-date and concise review of the thymus gland for both the surgeon and the physician.

Описание: The link between the pineal gland and cancer is a rapidly emerging research field due to promising experimental and clinical trials with melatonin. The pineal gland acts as a transducer of environmental light to regulate rhythmic processes, including reproductive function in seasonally breeding animals and the entrainment of circadian rhythms, such as the sleep-wake cycle, in man. This book elucidates the physiological significance of the pineal gland and surveys phenomena and mechanisms of pineal - tumor interaction at the neuroendocrine, neuroimmune, neural, and molecular levels. Yet unidentified low-molecular-weight pineal substances with tumor-inhibiting capacity, a possible involvement of melatonin in electromagnetic field effects on cancer, and the oncotherapeutic potential of melatonin are also addressed. The encouraging results should incite further research to elucidate the exact nature of the link between the pineal gland and cancer for the benefit of patients.
Описание: Addressing controversial and topical issues in the field of salivary gland disease and surgical management of salivary gland disease, this new edition integrates the newest clinical findings with the historical pathological records, and attempts to resolve any conflicts between the two.
