Описание: Who `lost` Christian North Africa? Who won and how? Walter Kaegi examines these perennial questions, with maps and on-site observations, in this exciting book. An impartial comparative framework helps to sort through identity politics, `Orientalism` charges and counter-charges, and institutional controversies.
Описание: " Westward expansion of the United States is most conventionally remembered for rugged individualism, geographic isolationism, and a fair amount of luck. Yet the establishment of the forty-eight contiguous states was hardly a foregone conclusion, and the federal government played a critical role in its success. This book examines the politics of American expansion, showing how the government`s regulation of population movements on the frontier, both settlement and removal, advanced national aspirations for empire and promoted the formation of a white settler nation. Building an American Empire details how a government that struggled to exercise plenary power used federal land policy to assert authority over the direction of expansion by engineering the pace and patterns of settlement and to control the movement of populations. At times, the government mobilized populations for compact settlement in strategically important areas of the frontier; at other times, policies were designed to actively restrain settler populations in order to prevent violence, international conflict, and breakaway states. Paul Frymer examines how these settlement patterns helped construct a dominant racial vision for America by incentivizing and directing the movement of white European settlers onto indigenous and diversely populated lands. These efforts were hardly seamless, and Frymer pays close attention to the failures as well, from the lack of further expansion into Latin America to the defeat of the black colonization movement. Building an American Empire reveals the lasting and profound significance government settlement policies had for the nation, both for establishing America as dominantly white and for restricting broader aspirations for empire in lands that could not be so racially engineered. Описание:
The Partition Method for a Power Series Expansion: Theory and Applications explores how the method known as 'the partition method for a power series expansion', which was developed by the author, can be applied to a host of previously intractable problems in mathematics and physics.
In particular, this book describes how the method can be used to determine the Bernoulli, cosecant, and reciprocal logarithm numbers, which appear as the coefficients of the resulting power series expansions, then also extending the method to more complicated situations where the coefficients become polynomials or mathematical functions. From these examples, a general theory for the method is presented, which enables a programming methodology to be established.
Finally, the programming techniques of previous chapters are used to derive power series expansions for complex generating functions arising in the theory of partitions and in lattice models of statistical mechanics.
Описание: This book traces the presence of the United States in German colonial discourse and practice from the late eighteenth century to 1945, focusing on American westward expansion and racial politics. It highlights the effects America`s expanding borders had on German liberalism and colonialism before the outbreak of World War I.

Описание: The Cross of War documents the rise of “messianic interventionism”—the belief that America can and should intervene altruistically on behalf of other nations. This stance was first embraced in the Spanish-American War of 1898, a war that marked the dramatic emergence of the United States as an active world power and set the stage for the foreign policy of the next one hundred years. Responding to the circumstances of this war, an array of Christian leaders carefully articulated and defended the notion that America was responsible under God to extend freedom around the world—by force, if necessary. Drawing from a wide range of sermons and religious periodicals across regional and denominational lines, Matthew McCullough describes the ways that many American Christians came to celebrate military intervention as a messianic sacrifice, to trace the hand of God in a victory more painless and complete than anyone had imagined, and to justify the new shift in American foreign policy as a divine calling.

Описание:
Alexander Dalrymple was once described as the man who, after Hakluyt, had done most for the spread of Britain's commerce. In this important new work, Dr. Fry discusses Dalrymple's extensive contribution to knowledge about New Guinea and his pioneer attempt to establish a free port on Balambangan, and shows that his interest in the possibility of a North-West Passage and his influence in government circles were to be a major factor in bringing about Vancouver's survey.
Dalrymple's research and theories about the great Southern Continent led to his appointment by the Royal Society as commander of the 1768 expedition, and though the Admiralty countermanded this decision and appointed instead Captain Cook, Dalrymple's geographical researches were the motivating force behind the initiation of the search for Terra Australis. Dr. Fry throws interesting new light on Dalrymple's relations with Cook, which, he argues, have been consistently misrepresented.
Dalrymple became an expert navigator and surveyor during his years as captain of East India snows, and he became in turn hydrographer of the East India Company and the Admiralty. His work in this field revolutionised chart-making and was a contribution of incalculable value to Britain's maritime supremacy in the nineteenth century. This classic book was first published in 1970.
