Описание: Oil and its related crises in the Niger Delta Region of Nigeria simmered for a while and gradually reached a crescendo. At the outset, it was thought that the Niger Delta crises were limited to the core states of the region. Yet, the problem has today become perhaps the political albatross of the country.Much has been said and written about the NDRN as well as the impact of oil on the region. But of course the foundation of all these is the crisis of oil control, injustice and regional conspiracy against the NDR, which is home to Nigeria’s oil and gas industry –the base of Nigeria’s economy. Crude oil reserves in the region are estimated at about 35 billion barrels and Nigeria depends almost entirely on oil revenue. In spite of this enormous resources and revenues that accrue from oil, the region has been neglected by successive governments. The establishment of interventionist agencies, particularly the MNDA to address development in the region is a major response to the Willinks Report. In this text, the authors explore the dynamics leading to the emergence of these agencies as well as showcase the politics behind their failures, and make strong recommendations going forward.
Описание: The Niger delta with its gentle slope and low elevation is extremely sensitive to effects of climate change. Its adaptive capacity is the second lowest in terms of socio-economic development in Nigeria. Quantitative studies on developing measures for coastal planning and management in the lower Niger delta have been limited by data availability and inaccessibility of parts of the delta. The use of satellite data can help bridge the data gap by providing ancillary data (imagery, elevation, altimetry etc.) that can be used to quantify the effects of SLR in the Niger delta. This thesis uses satellite data as the main source for hydrodynamic modelling and GIS analysis. Until recently such data might not have the accuracy and precision of directly measured data. However recent innovative approaches have enabled better exploitation of satellite data to overcome these limitations and produce adequate results to assess the impact of SLR on the Niger delta in an integrated way that will lead to practical recommendations for adaptation. Using projected global eustatic SLR values in combination with land subsidence, this thesis estimated SLR levels for the Niger delta and its effect on inundation areas and flood extent. The results indicate that the Niger delta is very vulnerable to inundation and that even minimal SLR will affect flooding in the lower Niger delta since the area continues to subside. A new coastal vulnerability index was developed in this thesis by evaluating physical, social and human influence indicators of exposure, susceptibility and resilience. The results show that parts of the Niger delta are highly vulnerable to SLR and need adequate mitigation/adaptation measures to protect them. It is recommended that sustainable local resilience practices already being used in parts of the Niger delta should be included in adaptation planning.

Описание: The book titled Climate Change and Food Security in the Niger Delta Region, Nigeria offers vital learning guide and instructional resource for researchers, scholars, professionals and environmental experts. Variables that contribute to global warming and food security are well stated and analyzed in this book. The findings of this book will provide useful guide to Government planning agencies, policies makers, technocrats and donor agencies to combat food insecurity problem globally. The data and results contained in this book will be advantageous to scholars, researchers, undergraduate and graduate students who intend to conduct research in this field. The book provides insight on global warming (climate change) and the need for adaptation and mitigation measures by various Governments globally becomes necessary. Hon. Описание: Sustainability levels in the Niger Delta Region by two prolific writers represent the first ever concrete attempt to address this very important but long neglected problem. Despite enormous contribution to national development, the level of sustainability in the Niger Delta Region remains a pressing concern to many people. Writing as seasoned environmental experts and academia, the authors’ main thesis is that the developments in the region since the pre independence era are clear departures from sustainable norms. The level, trend and dimensions of sustainability in the region have not been empirically diagnosed to warrant any policy direction. In essence, this book explores the interface between environmental, economic, social and institutional subsystems of sustainability in the region using empirical evidences. The book provides a scientific analysis of the trend and dimensions of sustainability in the region from 1958 to 2010 and projections to 2020. Factors which influence the trends and dimensions of sustainability in the region are examined while policy imperatives identified.
Описание: This study aims to identify problem that hamper development in the Niger Delta and Nigeria as a whole, It identified corruption as one of the major factor hampering development.Identifying Nigeria as one of the largest producers of crude oil, standing shoulder to shoulder to any Arab nation in the trade and in terms of wealth. Poverty is a looming crisis in the nation that seems never ending as several administrations both military and democratic havinng adopted several solutions and schemes that have yielded no effect to the common Nigerian on the streets with further lack of infrastructure and the impoverished in the Niger delta, where this enormous wealth is generated. This book identified keys indicators used by agencies such as the UN, IMF and World Bank; economic indicators, growth rate, productivity and poverty line of a country. A research conducted in Port-Harcourt,Rivers state in its suburbs for security reasons in line with key indicators to examine the cause of poverty in the region in the last four decades incomparably to other oil rich regions. These points are addressed to identify major causes of poverty, problems from the methods used by the government in this area

Описание: This Monograph on “Management of Nigeria’s Niger Delta Crisis in the Context of John Rawls’ Treatise on Justice” is a novel way of understanding and managing the ethnic minority conflict that has for over four decades strained the relationships between the trio; the Niger Delta peoples, the Federal Government of Nigeria, and the Multinational Oil Companies in the country. It presents a consistent account of the relationship between these conflicting parties before and after Nigeria’s independence in 1960. The text identifies ‘injustice’ as a common denominator to the different trends of conflicts in the region and locates the context of the Niger Delta Crisis in two epochal events of 1914. It discusses various efforts directed at resolving the crisis. The text argues that where there is no justice, there can never be peace. Thus, as a text on Conflict Management and Peace Philosophy, the monograph offers us the opportunity of understanding the requirements of the principles of Justice as fairness in the management of minority conflicts the world over.
