Описание: An experiment was conducted to determine the impact of plantain, Bio-Sel-E and commercial broiler diet on the growth performance, feed conversion ratio, performance index and carcass yield of broiler. The highest (P<0.05) body weight gain was attained in Bio-Sel-E-diet among the four groups. Feed conversion ratios of plantain, Bio-Sel-E, and commercial broiler diet were lower (P<0.05) than the control. The significantly similar performance index was found in plantain, Bio-Sel-E and commercial broiler diet group, which were significantly (P<0.01) higher than control. The dressing yield of plantain and commercial broiler diet were higher (P<0.05) than Control and Bio-Sel-E diet group. The abdominal fat content of Plantain and Bio-Sel-E diet were lower (P<0.05) than those of Control and commercial broiler diet. It could be concluded that the Supplementation of 0.5% plantain in the diet had positive effect on growth, feed intake, Feed conversion ratio, performance index and carcass characteristics of broilers almost similar of Bio-Sel-E and commercial broiler diet.

One hundred and twenty practitioners were selected using multi-stage sampling techniques and structured interview guides to elicit information. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Result revealed that most of the respondents were males, married, educated, bred Clarias spp and used deep well water. Generated the mean income of N1,088,933.3, N1,072,133.3, N1,122,166.7 and N976,151.3 in Abeokuta, Ijebu-Ode, Ikenne and Ilaro zones respectively. Major constraints hindering business were poor marketing, poor genetic brood stocks, high inflation rate in the economy, poor infrastructural facilities and lack of finance. ANOVA revealed that there were significant differences among socio-economic characteristics of fish breeders in the four zones. There were significant differences between the cost elements in fish breeding activities and the total income. There was significant difference between the constraints associated with fish hatchery operations and the income. Government to find a lasting solution to the persistent inflation rate and establish brood stock banks.

Описание: The Food Security (FS) status of most households in Nigeria has worsened, especially due to inadequate economic access to food, most especially in the rural areas. However, most studies in Nigeria have focused on either households’ food demand or FS without establishing the linkage. Therefore, nexus between households’ FS and food demand in Nigeria was investigated. Cross-sectional data from National Living Standard Survey (NLSS) for 2004 by National Bureau of Statistics were utilized. A total of 18,861 rural and urban households were used for the analysis. Variables used were households’ socioeconomic characteristics, prices, quantity purchased and expenditure on Food. Data were analysed by sectors using descriptive statistics, Foster, Greer and Thorbecke and sequential probit regression models. Low Food Demand Food Insecure Group (LFDFIG) was 42.6% in RA, while High Food Demand Food Secure Group (HFDFSG) was 44.1% in UA. Food insecurity was found to be higher in the RA with majority entrapped in LFDFINSG. Access to land and having formal education ensure transition of households out of LFDFINSG in RA.Access to credit ensures households remained in HFDFSG in UA.

Описание: Nematode pests of pineapple have not been well studied in Nigeria compared to other countries worldwide. In this study, the geographical distribution of nematodes associated with pineapple in Southern Nigeria and their management with organic manure and chemical pesticide was investigated. Pineapple fruits from the chemical-treated plots were also analyzed for pesticide residue in the fruits using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). The study indicated a widespread distribution of plant-parasitic nematodes of pineapple in Southern Nigeria. Carbofuran (pesticide) and poultry manure effectively suppressed the population of plant-parasitic nematodes in naturally-infested pineapple plots and promoted crop yield. Carbofuran and its metabolites were not detected in the pineapple fruits that were tested for pesticide residue, suggesting that Carbofuran is not likely to constitute dietary risks for consumers of fruits from treated plots. This study is of importance to resource-poor farmers for nematode control, to the fruit processing and manufacturing industries as well as regulatory agencies for food safety and environmental protection.
