Описание: In this concise study, the infamous Luftwaffe Stukas of World War II are shown in their earlier use during the Spanish Civil War as part of the Legion Condor. Using text and photographic material from both Spanish and German archives, the famous Junkers Ju 87 and the lesser known Henschel Hs 123 are shown in rare war-era photographs, as well as in color profiles. The operational and technical details of both dive-bomber aircraft types are also presented, as well as the histories of the units that flew them.

Описание: Developed in the 1960s/1970s, the Tu-144 was the Soviet Unions only practical venture into supersonic commercial aviation. Though its career was all too brief, it was a major technological achievement for the Soviet aircraft industry. The book provides in-depth coverage of the "Concordski," including projected versions, the Tu-144s production and service history, and a comparison with the Concorde. First flown on the last day of 1968-ahead of the Concorde-the Tu-144 had to undergo a long gestation period before the production version entered service in November 1977. Unfortunately, its career proved to be brief; two accidents and a powerful anti-Tu-144 lobby caused the type to be withdrawn in May 1978. The book describes the Tu-144s versions (including the Tu-144LL research aircraft developed under a Russian-U.S. program) and touches on the projected military derivatives. It is illustrated with color side views and previously unpublished photographs.

Описание: This meticulously researched volume is a must in the library of any aviation buff: the most comprehensive descriptive and illustrated history of military and civilian aircraft and their pilots (men and women) to increase the range and endurance of their aircraft. Beginning with the proof of concept efforts to establish the airplane as a true flying machine from 1900 to WWI, it then delves into civilian and military efforts by country, with the civilian effort mainly for personal achievement and the military for ultimately developing the intercontinental bomber and beyond. Hundreds of daring civilian flights of the 1920s and 30s are described by nation until the start of WWII. The inflight refueling mania of the 1930s and pre- and post-WWII military refueling efforts are covered. Post-WWII civilian aircraft and military fighter distance record attempts are included, as are the efforts of the Cold War and beyond. Also described are airline, seaplane, balloon, glider, hang glider, solar, and human-powered aircraft accounts.
Описание: In 1935, the intent of the Army Air Corps was to build a potential intercontinental bomber, a "Guardian of the Hemisphere"; they granted Donald Douglas a contract to build the world's largest bomber. Over the past 75 years, there have only been a few magazine articles on the gigantic Douglas XB-19 bomber, usually showing it in photos dwarfing the aircraft around it. Since the XB-19 project was top secret and there was only one example, there is little information remaining for researchers. William Wolf presents this enigmatic bomber, a "Flying Laboratory" that was the precursor to America's first intercontinental bomber, the Continental B-36 Peacemaker. Wolf has used original Douglas and Army Air Force documents and very rare (as few were needed for one bomber) Erection & Maintenance Manuals in this history, which also includes never-seen-before photos and color profiles. This volume is a must for the aviation historian, enthusiast, and modeler.
Описание: From the B-17 Flying Fortress and PBY Catalina, via the F-4 Phantom to the F-15I Thunder, Israeli Air Force 69 Squadron, the Hammers, have always been the long-range, heavy bombing element of Israeli air power. 69 Sqdn. fought in six wars and flew thousands of missions. The first Hammers mission was the bombardment of Cairo in July 1948. The final B-17 missions were flown during the 1956 Suez War, the last of the Flying Fortresses to bomb operationally anywhere. From 1969, the Hammers flew the legendary F-4 through participation in the War of Attrition, the Yom Kippur War and the Lebanon War. Flying the F-15I since 1998, the Hammers story of operations, aircraft and persons is the essence of this book that unveils, for the first time ever, the full story of Israeli B-17 operations, the complete story of how the Israeli Phantoms defeated the Syrian SAM network in Lebanon, the thundering introduction of the F-15I into Israeli service, and much more.
Описание: This operational history of the XX (20th) Bomber Command and its combat missions from India and China in 1944 and 1945 traces the development of the Boeing B-29 Superfortress program and the Allied plans to stage long-range bombers through China for strikes against Japans strategic industries. Each of the 49 combat missions flown by the XX Bomber Command from India and China is examined, producing the first detailed history of the B-29 campaign flown from these countries. The book is written almost exclusively from primary source materialaWorld War II documents, crew member memoirs, and personal interviews. Special sections within the book examine issues related to flying across the "Hump" between India and China; General Curtis LeMays reorganization of B-29 operations; and the night fighter defense of the B-29 forward airfields in China.
