Levinas's account of responsibility challenges dominant notions of time, autonomy, and subjectivity according to Cynthia D. Coe. Employing the concept of trauma in Levinas's late writings, Coe draws together his understanding of time and his claim that responsibility is an obligation to the other that cannot be anticipated or warded off. Tracing the broad significance of these ideas, Coe shows how Levinas revises our notions of moral agency, knowledge, and embodiment. Her focus on time brings a new interpretive lens to Levinas's work and reflects on a wider discussion of the fragmentation of human experience as an ethical subject. Coe's understanding of trauma and time offers a new appreciation of how Levinas can inform debates about gender, race, mortality, and animality.
In exploring the nature of excess relative to a phenomenology of the limit, Testing the Limit claims that phenomenology itself is an exploration of excess. What does it mean that "the self" is "given"? Should we see it as originary; or rather, in what way is the self engendered from textual practices that transgress—or hover around and therefore within—the threshold of phenomenologial discourse? This is the first book to include Michel Henry in a triangulation with Derrida and Levinas and the first to critique Levinas on the basis of his interpolation of philosophy and religion. Sebbah claims that the textual origins of phenomenology determine, in their temporal rhythms, the nature of the subjectivation on which they focus. He situates these considerations within the broader picture of the state of contemporary French phenomenology (chiefly the legacy of Merleau-Ponty), in order to show that these three thinkers share a certain "family resemblance," the identification of which reveals something about the traces of other phenomenological families. It is by testing the limit within the context of traditional phenomenological concerns about the appearance of subjectivity and ipseity that Derrida, Henry, and Levinas radically reconsider phenomenology and that French phenomenology assumes its present form.

Описание: This book explores the relation between Heidegger, Levinas and Derrida by means of a dialogue with experts on the work of these mutually influential thinkers. Each essay in this collection focuses on the relation between at least two of these three philosophers focusing on various themes, such as Alterity, Justice, Truth and Language. By contextualising these thinkers and tracing their mutually shared themes, the book establishes the question of difference and its ongoing radicalization as the problem to which phenomenology must respond. Heidegger’s influence on Derrida and Levinas was quite substantial. Derrida once claimed that his work ‘would not have been possible without the opening of Heidegger’s questions.’ Equally, as peers, Derrida and Levinas commented on and critiqued each other’s work. By examining the differences between these thinkers on a variety of themes, this book represents a philosophically enriching project and essential reading for understanding the respective projects of each of these philosophers.
Описание: This book is a collection of papers given at the International Conference "Levinas in Jerusalem" held at the Hebrew University in May 2002. It gives an overview of the most fecund areas of research in Levinas scholarship.

Описание: Examining the legacies of Heidegger, along with Derrida, Levinas and Nietzsche, Rafael Winkler argues that it is not the search for truth or even contradictions that stimulates philosophical thought. Instead, it is our exposure to the unthinkable or the impossible - to thought's own limits.
An experience of the unthinkable is possible in our encounter with the uniqueness of death, the singularity of being, and of the self and the other. This 'thinking of finitude' also has political implications, as it provides us with a way to talk about, and evaluate, absolute strangeness and, by implication, the absolute stranger or foreigner.
Illuminating Heidegger's writings on the question of ontology, ethics and history, Winkler proves that this encounter with thought's limits is one of the mainstays of the philosophies of difference of Heidegger, Levinas, and Nietzsche.

Описание: Hermeneutics and Phenomenology inPaul Ricoeur: Between Text and Phenomenon calls attentionto the dynamic interaction that takes place between hermeneutics andphenomenology in Ricoeur’s thought. It could be said thatRicoeur’s thought is placed under a twofold demand:between the rigor of the text and the requirements of thephenomenon. The rigor of the text calls for fidelity to what the textactually says, while the requirement of the phenomenon is established by theHusserlian call to return “to the things themselves.” These two demands areinterwoven insofar as there is a hermeneutic component of the phenomenologicalattempt to go beyond the surface of things to their deeper meaning, just asthere is a phenomenological component of the hermeneutic attempt to establish acritical distance toward the world to which we belong. For this reason,Ricoeur’s thought involves a back and forth movement between the text and thephenomenon. Although this double movement was a theme of many of Ricoeur’sessays in the middle of his career, the essays in this book suggest thathermeneutic phenomenology remains implicit throughout his work. The chaptersaim to highlight, in much greater detail, how this back and forth movementbetween phenomenology and hermeneutics takes place with respect to manyimportant philosophical themes, including the experience of the body, history, language, memory, personal identity, and intersubjectivity.

Описание: Matthew Stone asks what unites apparently disparate applications of Levinas` ideas about law and explores the ethical challenge of law`s relationship with `the Other`. Ultimately, he is sceptical that Levinasian ethics can be invested in legal institutions and instead proposes that it should be embodied in the perpetual critique of law.
