Описание: This book offers a comprehensive examination of the important security issue of tactical nuclear weapons in Europe. Nuclear nonproliferation and disarmament have returned to the top of the international political agenda. The issue assumes particular importance in regard to NATO, given that some 150–200 US tactical nuclear weapons (TNWs) are still present in five countries belonging to the Alliance (Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Turkey). The past few years have seen animated debate in the United States and Europe on the role of such weapons in the current scenario of international security, and whether they can be further reduced or completely removed from Europe. Bringing together leading scholars and analysts of TNW with country-specific competences, this volume improves our understanding of this debate by providing in-depth analysis of the presence, role, perceived value and destiny of TNWs in Europe. The book addresses the issue in a systematic manner, taking into account the perspectives of all main actors directly or indirectly involved in the debate. This approach provides new and important insights that can inform both theoretical and policy work on a very critical and timely international issue, especially during the ongoing review of NATO's deterrence and defence posture. This book will be of much interest to students of European politics, European security, nuclear proliferation, and IR in general.
Описание: This volume includes a representative selection of Sidney Drell's recent writings and speeches (circa 1993 to the present) on public policy issues with
substantial scientific components. Most of the writings deal with national security, nuclear weapons, and arms control and reflect the author's personal involvement in such issues dating
back to 1960. Fifteen years after the demise of the Soviet Union, the gravest danger presented by nuclear weapons is the spread of advanced technology that may result in the
proliferation of nuclear weapons.
Of most concern would be their acquisition by hostile governments and terrorists who are unconstrained by accepted norms of civilized
behavior. The current challenges are to prevent this from happening and, at the same time, to pursue aggressively the opportunity to escape from an outdated nuclear deterrence

Описание: Jina Kim investigates how North Korea rationalized its pursuit of nuclear weapons programs for more than two decades, by exploring the dialectical development of the nuclear crisis and the obstacles generated by complex internal Korean dynamics and conflicting interests amongst the major players concerned.
Описание: Kristan Stoddart reveals for the first time discussions that took place between the British, French and US governments for nuclear cooperation in the early to mid 1970s. In doing so it sets the scene for the upgrade to Britain`s Polaris force codenamed Chevaline and how this could have brought down Harold Wilson`s Labour government of 1974-1976.

Описание: This book theorises why states, such as Brazil and South Africa, which could easily have become nuclear-weapon states, chose instead to reverse their courses and renounce nuclear weapons.
Описание: This book examines the puzzle of why some states acquire nuclear weapons, whereas others refrain from trying to do so – or even renounce them. Based on the predominant theoretical thinking in International Relations it is often assumed that nuclear proliferation is inevitable, given the anarchic nature of the international system. Proliferation is thus often explained by vague references to states’ insecurity in an anarchic environment. Yet, elusive generalisations and grand, abstract theories inhibit a more profound and detailed knowledge of the very political processes that lead towards nuclearisation or its reversal. Drawing upon the philosophical and social-theoretical insights of American pragmatism, The Politics of Nuclear Non-Proliferation provides a theoretically innovative and practically useful framework for the analysis of states’ nuclear proliferation policies. Rather than reccounting a parsimonious, lean account of proliferation, the framework allows for the incorporation of multiple paradigms in order to depict the complex political contestation underlying states’ proliferation decisions. This pragmatist framework of analysis offers ways of overcoming long-standing metatheoretical gridlocks in the IR discipline and encourages scholars to reorient their efforts towards imminent "real-world" challenges. This book will be of much interest to students of nuclear proliferation, international security and IR theory. ?
Описание: The difficult challenge for a terrorist organization seeking to build a nuclear weapon or improvised nuclear device is obtaining fissile material, either plutonium or highly enriched uranium (HEU). This book examines the economic, political and strategic obstacles to international efforts to end the use of HEU for commercial and research purposes.

In the recent past there have been several high-profile unilateral, bilateral and multilateral declarations calling for a world free of nuclear weapons, further efforts to prevent proliferation and initiatives to secure nuclear material from falling into the hands of non-state actors, particularly terrorists groups. This work seeks to provide a concise and comprehensive analysis of the role of global institutions in this campaign.
provides a brief historical survey of the key international institutions as well as their major achievements
details the new challenges that confront these institutions, particularly in the post-Cold War world
analyses examine the role of the ad-hoc arrangements which emerged to address these specific challenges and their impact on the existing international institutions that they were meant to strengthen
suggests a series of initiatives - both ad-hoc and institutionalized - which could reform and reinvigorate the institutions to carry out their widening and deepening mandates
evaluates the prospects of these institutions in not only carrying out their basic disarmament and non-proliferation mandates but also establishing the norms and code of conduct for an eventual world free of nuclear weapons.
Seeking to establish the reasons behind the inability of international institutions to carry out their mandates, and examining what will be necessary to ensure the future success of these initiatives, this work is an invaluable resource for all students, scholars and policy makers.
Описание: Much of the literature on the emerging role of the EU as a non-proliferation actor has only a minimal engagement with theory. This collection aims to rectify this by placing the role of the EU in the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons within an analytical framework inspired by emerging literature on the performance of international organisations.
