Описание: Edvard Munch came of age during an artistic period that celebrated beauty and design. But in his own art, Munch explored darker themes-alienation, sin, and human vulnerability. His resulting work incorporated the vivid colors of previous styles, but intensified their emotional power and paved the way for an entirely new approach to painting. Although much has been written about Munch's life and its influence on his art, there has not been a study of the artist's influence on his German and Austrian peers-until now. Featuring contributions by leading scholars in the field, including Patricia Bermann, Alison Chang, Jay Clarke, Reinhold Heller, Jill Lloyd, Nils Ohlsen, and Oystein Uvstedt, this authoritative and beautifully illustrated book explores Munch's impact on Austrian and German artists of the period within an Expressionist context. It also examines work in specific media, such as Munch's seminal contributions to printmaking. The artist's thematic and stylistic leitmotifs are highlighted, including self-portraiture, urban scenes, landscapes, couples, and the artist and his model. Vibrant reproductions of works from throughout Munch's oeuvre, including such icons as The Scream, Madonna, and The Kiss, make this a splendid introduction to the artist as well as an exciting springboard to the study of European Expressionism.

Описание: This book explores the forces that shaped German Expressionism in the years before World War I. Jill Lloyd discusses the politics of the movement, the various indigenous political currents that influenced it, and in particular, the appeal of the primitive, an appeal that was enhanced by Germany's colonial aspirations and adventures. Lloyd argues that primitivism and modernity were the two poles of the German Expressionist movement. The artists' engagement with the city and with their own time and place led them to paint colourful, optimistic cabaret and circus scenes as well as lonely, alienating Berlin streets. At the same time, the Expressionists searched for a counter image to the modern world and turned to the eternal and timeless notions of the primitive. Some, such as Max Pechstein and Emil Nolde, even travelled to the South Seas, following in the footsteps of Gauguin. According to Lloyd, the Expressionists' concepts of the primitive and their ideas about non-European peoples and tribal art were reinforced by patterns of thought and colonial attitudes of the time. Lloyd finds links between the Expressionists' approach to primitive arts and crafts and the ethnography, sciences, politics, art history, and popular culture of their era. And as she examines their paintings, graphics, photographs, carved furniture and wall hangings, she shows how this diverse activity reflected an ideology that associated primitive peoples and unfettered behaviour with a fresh and more authentic culture. This book won the first National Art Book Prize.

Описание: Abstract Expressionism has long been bound up with the careers and lifestyles of the white male artists who exhibited in New York in the 1940s. This text
reconsiders the history of the movement by investigating other largely ignored artists - people of colour, women, and gays and lesbians.

Описание: The artists Jay DeFeo, Helen Frankenthaler, Grace Hartigan, Elaine de Kooning, Lee Krasner, Joan Mitchell, and many other women played major roles in the development of Abstract Expressionism, which flourished in New York and San Francisco in the 1940s and 1950s and has been recognized as the first fully American modern art movement. Though the contributions of these women were central to American art of the twentieth century, their work has not received the same critical attention as that of their male counterparts. "Women of Abstract Expressionism" is a long-overdue survey. Lavishly illustrated with full-color plates emphasizing the expressive freedom of direct gesture and process at the core of the movement, this book features biographies of more than forty artists, offering insight into their lives and work. Essays by noted scholars explore the techniques, concerns, and legacies of women in Abstract Expressionism, shedding light on their unique experiences. This groundbreaking book reveals the richness of the careers of these important artists and offers keen new reflections on their work and the movement as a whole. "

Описание: In 1946 the art critic Robert Coates, writing in The New Yorker, first used the term `Abstract Expressionism`. The two words combine the emotional intensity of the German Expressionists with the anti-figurative aesthetic of the European Abstract schools. This title seeks to re-evaluate the movement, recognising its complex and fluid reality.
