This perspective emphasizes the functions that emerge through the coaction and interaction of conspecifics and the commonality and differences across social species and superorganismal structures.
Описание: What is value? Where does it come from? How does it impact our emotions, motivations, decisions and experiences? Value is involved in practically every aspect of human life: whether we decide whom to marry or which political candidate to elect, whether we choose between consumer goods, whether we ask ourselves what is morally right, or beautiful, or sacred, value plays a crucial role. Today the investigation of value is central to many disciplines interested in human thinking, feeling, and behavior, such as economics, neuroscience, philosophy, psychology, or sociology. Interestingly, while these disciplines all investigate value, they use different definitions and focus on different aspects of the phenomenon. The Handbook of Value combines the forces of the many disciplines involved in value research, by integrating the perspectives of distinguished scholars from the different disciplines. To allow for a high degree of interdisciplinarity, the editors assembled a panel of eminent associate editors representing the different disciplines: Professor Ernst Fehr (economics), Professor Patrik Vuilleumier (neuroscience), Professor Julien Deonna (philosophy) and Professor Fabrice Clement (sociology). Contributions cover conceptual issues such as definitions of value, psychological and neurological mechanisms underlying value computation and representation, types and taxonomies of value, interindividual and intercultural value differences, the role of value in emotion, moral judgment, decision-making and behavior, as well as "case studies" of individual varieties of value. The volume contributes to an interdisciplinary dialogue and integration by providing a common reference point that will serve as a resource for disciplinary excellence and interdisciplinary cross-fertilization. At the same time, the volume provides an excellent overview of the academic state of the art for more practically oriented readers, for example from a business background, who want to understand the determinants of value.
Описание: This volume provides an authoritative overview of the field of interpersonal processes. The ideas and research into communal and exchange relationships are discussed, covering topics such as cognition/attribution, social motivation, affect/emotion, social influence and comparison and identity.
Описание: Provides an overview of the social psychology of group processes. Including bibliographies, this book covers topics such as: group decisions, juries, group remembering, roles, leadership, social identity and group membership, socialization, group performance, negotiation and bargaining, emotion and mood, computer-mediated communication, and more.
Описание: This overview of the field of intergroup processes is divided into nine major sections on cognition, motivation, emotion, communication and social influence, changing intergroup relations, social comparison, self-identity, methods and applications.
Описание: This volume provides an authoritative overview of the field of intrapersonal processes. The study of intrapersonal processes leans heavily on the theory and methodology of cognitive psychology to provide precise and detailed models of social information processing.
Описание: Our understanding of how humans process and interpret each other`s actions has increased by leaps and bounds. At the vanguard of these encouraging developments has been the research in the fields of cognitive neuroscience, developmental psychology, and autism. This volume integrates these areas of research on social cognition.
Описание: Social cognitive neuroscience is an emerging branch of cognitive neuroscience that bridges together social psychology and neuroscience. At its core is an
understanding of the relationship between the brain and social interaction. The social cognitive neuroscientist places empirical endeavor within a three-stage framework, and questions
falling under the SCN rubric undergo interrogation at each of these three levels.
Firstly, we seek to understand a neuroscience of social interactions at the social level. Here
we need to understand the motivational and other social factors that drive our behavior and experience in the real world. It goes without saying that any study of the cognitive
neuroscience of socially interactive behavior must first be informed by social psychological theory to maintain ecological validity.
Second, the social cognitive neuroscientist
must be an adroit cognitive psychologist and be able to examine interactive behavior from the cognitive level. It is here that information-proc
ssing models and theories are applied to the understanding of our social behavior. Finally, studies at the neural level seek to inform us about the cortical structures, as well as the way
they interact with other, in the mediation of the previous cognitive level. This volume brings together contributions from leading thinkers in both the social cognitive neurosciences and
business to provide a comprehensive introduction and overview of a social cognitive neuroscience of the business brain.

Описание: This Handbook examines disparities in public health by highlighting recent theoretical and methodological advances in cultural neuroscience. It traces the interactions of cultural, biological, and environmental factors that create adverse physical and mental health conditions among populations, and investigates how the policies of cultural and governmental institutions influence such outcomes. In addition to providing an overview of the current research, chapters demonstrate how a cultural neuroscience approach to the study of the mind, brain, and behavior can help stabilize the quality of health of societies at large. The volume will appeal especially to graduate students and professional scholars working in psychology and population genetics. The Oxford Handbook of Cultural Neuroscience represents the first collection of scholarly contributions from the International Cultural Neuroscience Consortium (ICNC), an interdisciplinary group of scholars from epidemiology, anthropology, psychology, neuroscience, genetics, and psychiatry dedicated to advancing an understanding of culture and health using theory and methods from cultural neuroscience. The Handbook is intended to introduce future generations of scholars to foundations in cultural neuroscience, and to equip them to address the grand challenges in global mental health in the twenty-first century.
Описание: Drug abuse and addiction are major societal problems, with annual economic costs that exceed $600 billion in the United States alone. The application of theory and methods from cognitive neuroscience has become increasingly important in the effort to better understand the mechanisms that contribute to the development and maintenance of addictive behavior. In addition, cognitive neuroscience techniques are proving highly valuable for research aimed at developing strategies to prevent and treat drug addiction. This volume provides a comprehensive, up–to–date synthesis of this expansive and highly influential literature by bringing together contributions from leading authorities in the field. The book is divided into six sections that span the breadth of the cognitive neuroscience of addiction; these include an inclusive review of current research and theory in all major conceptual and methodological domains of inquiry, and a synopsis of cutting–edge emerging themes and new directions that will shape the future of the study of drug addiction from the perspective of cognitive neuroscience. The book will serve as an accessible and thorough resource for researchers, graduate–level and postdoctoral trainees, and clinical practitioners who are interested in the study and treatment of drug addiction.
Academic interest in the phenomenon of joint attention-- the capacity toattend to an object together with another creature--has increased rapidly over thepast two decades. Yet it isn't easy to spell out in detail what joint attention is, how it ought to be characterized, and what exactly its significance consists in. Thewriters for this volume address these and related questions by drawing on a varietyof disciplines, including developmental and comparative psychology, philosophy ofmind, and social neuroscience. The volume organizes their contributions along threemain themes: definitional concerns, such as the question of whether or not jointattention should be understood as an irreducibly basic state of mind; processes andmechanisms obtaining on both the neural and behavioral levels; and the functionalsignificance of joint attention, in particular the role it plays in comprehendingspatial perspectives and understanding other minds. The collected papers present newwork by leading researchers on one of the key issues in social cognition. Theydemonstrate that an adequate theory of joint attention is indispensable for acomprehensive account of mind.
Описание: The field of social cognitive neuroscience has captured the attention of many researchers during the past ten years. Much of the impetus for this new field came from the development of functional neuroimaging methods that made it possible to unobtrusively measure brain activation over time. Using these methods over the last 30 years has allowed psychologists to move from simple validation questions -- would flashing stimuli activate the visual cortex -- to those about the functional specialization of brain regions -- are there regions in the inferior temporal cortex dedicated to face processing -- to questions that, just a decade ago, would have been considered intractable at such a level of analysis. These so-called "intractable" questions are the focus of the chapters in this book, which introduces social cognitive neuroscience research addressing questions of fundamental importance to social psychology: How do we understand and represent other people? How do we represent social groups? How do we regulate our emotions and socially undesirable responses? This book also presents innovative combinations of multiple methodologies, including behavioral experiments, computer modeling, functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) experiments, Event-Related Potential (ERP) experiments, and brain lesion studies. It is divided into four sections. The first three sections present the latest research on, respectively, understanding and representing other people, representing social groups, and the interplay of cognition and emotion in social regulation. In the fourth section, contributors step back and consider a range of novel topics that have emerged in the context of social neuroscience research: understanding social exclusion as pain, deconstructing our moral intuitions, understanding cooperative exchanges with other agents, and the effect of aging on brain function and its implications for well-being. Taken together, these chapters provide a rich introduction to an exciting, rapidly developing and expanding field that promises a richer and deeper understanding of the social mind.
