Описание: Barrio Writers 8th Edition brings an impressive breadth and depth of emotion and cultural insights which can’t be overstated. The prose and poetry collected here by these bright young writers capture, almost all at once, what their lives are truly about, how their lives have been challenged, and yet, most importantly, how these youth almost always manage to triumph, through the very act of writing. Interspersed throughout this volume are valuable writing prompts other young writers can use to develop their own literacy and literary skills. These prompts allow writers to develop their perspectives on their own, while being aided with valuable insights other prospective young writers can follow to their own ends. Barrio Writers 8th Edition delivers powerful and exemplary poetic and prosaic testaments which should inspire others to tell of their lives in as impressive a style as found in this new volume—impressive because of their daring to write their way onto triumphant higher ground without ever leaving behind their cultural homes.
Описание: Fifty years of poems from the Community of Writers' poetry workshop The Community of Writers (formerly Squaw Valley Writers' Conference) celebrates fifty years of its annual summer poetry workshop in Olympic Valley, California, with this collection of one hundred and forty poems first composed there. Edited by writers workshop codirector Lisa Alvarez and introduced by longtime poetry director Robert Hass, the book is divided into three sections: poems that evoke the Valley's physical setting, with its granite-and-pine mountain beauty; poems that peer into the poetic process, filled with inspiration and idiosyncrasy; and poems of all shapes and kinds that owe their origins to the workshop and its productive morning review sessions. Contributors include both workshop staff and participants, among them Lucille Clifton, Sharon Olds, Al Young, Matthew Zapruder, Harryette Mullen, Galway Kinnell, Rita Dove, Cornelius Eady, Robert Hass, and Forrest Gander. The title of the collection comes from a question posed by original poetry director Galway Kinnell: "Then why to these rocks / Do I keep coming back why." It speaks to the special community nurtured in this stunning setting, one that has inspired poets worldwide--many of whom developed significant bodies of award-winning work in its creative and generative atmosphere.

Описание: Erotic desire is as old as the human race and erotic literature as old as civilization. With bold, new translations, the author presents and discusses some of the most beautiful, stirring expressions of erotic desire from the ancient world of Greece and Rome, reaching across three thousand years of history to tap into the many kinds of passion we still know today: new or seasoned, obsessive or unrequited, heterosexual or homosexual, noble or illicit. Students learn the cultural events that led to a grand flourish of erotic poetry in Greece and Rome during the Archaic and Hellenistic periods, as well as the “Golden Age of Rome.” Readers traverse the varied works of over 35 different poets: from the epic interludes of Homer and Vergil to the personal lyrics of Sappho and Catullus, from the playful admonitions of Ovid to the dark elegies of Propertius, from a woman’s meditations on romance scribbled on a fragile papyrus in Egypt to anonymous verses about lost love scrawled on a crumbling wall in Pompeii. By introducing the reader to the greatest poets of the ancient world, this compelling collection demonstrates why ancient love poems have stood the test of time and continue to resonate with contemporary audiences.Complete with introductions, cultural context, and engaging analysis for each selected work, along with thought-provoking questions to stimulate classroom discussion, Erotic Love Poems of Greece and Rome is an ideal choice for survey courses in classics, world literature, humanities, sexuality, and gender studies.
Although Anne (Chana) Kleiman--who died in 2011 at the age of 101--was the first American-born Jewish woman to publish poems in Hebrew, and Annabelle (Chana) Farmelant--who is still living and occasionally publishing--wrote a substantial body of Hebrew verse from the 1940s to the 1960s, their work is virtually unknown today, even to those familiar with Hebrew literature in America. In Women's Hebrew Poetry on American Shores: Poems by Anne Kleiman and Annabelle Farmelant, editor Shachar Pinsker recovers the singular voices of these women, introducing their captivating and wide--ranging poetry and placing it in its historical, literary, and cultural contexts.
Women's Hebrew Poetry on American Shores presents a bilingual edition of Kleiman and Farmelant's work in a large range of themes, moods, and styles, translated into English for the first time by Adriana X. Jacobs and Yosefa Raz. It includes Kleiman's poems that were collected and published in a 1947 U.S. volume and a selection from two of Farmelant's poetry books, published in Jerusalem in 1960 and 1961. The translators have furnished the poems with copious notes, illuminating linguistic and cultural sources of the poetry and making it more accessible to contemporary readers. Pinsker introduces the volume with a background on the poets' lives and work and a look at the state of Hebrew literature in the first half of the twentieth century. The volume also includes an unpublished essay by Anne Kleiman, addressing Hebrew poet Anda Pinkerfeld and her poetic work, which sheds an important light on the dialogue between women's Hebrew poetry written in American and in Palestine during the same period.
Readers and scholars of Jewish, American, and Hebrew literature and cultural history, as well as those interested in poetry, gender, and women's studies will enjoy this unique bilingual edition.
