Описание: In a world where ‘smart’ objects can talk to each other and a gun can be printed with a desktop 3D printer, the conditions for contemporary design are nothing if not surreal. The long-standing interaction between architecture and Surrealism is being reinvigorated by the technological paradigm shift that makes the protocols, concepts and otherworldliness of Surrealism more relevant to architects than the dogmas of architectural modernism. This book charts the development of this fertile relationship, revealing how these ideas are being put to use by contemporary architects in extraordinary ways.
It opens with an introduction on the precursors of Surrealism in the Baroque and Rococo periods, moving into the 20th century through the Symbolists and Dadaists. The four main chapters present the interplay between architecture and Surrealism through the key concepts of the body, the interior space, the house, alternative realities and the environment. Each chapter presents a stunning spectrum of images and features contemporary work that shows the lasting influence of the movement.
In an era of wearable technology and big data, the fascinating possibilities for new worlds, new buildings and new spaces are creating the most exciting futures our architects face. Architecture and Surrealism will show the way.

Описание: Surrealism is an art movement, dedicated to expressing the imagination as revealed in dreams, free of the conscious control of reason and convention. Surrealism inherited its anti-rationalist sensibility from Dada, but was lighter in spirit than that movement. Like Dada, it was shaped by theories on our perception of reality.
Описание: Through a unique blend of art, film and architecture, "The Surreal House" presents the individual dwelling as a place of mystery and wonder. Fusing house and dream, it probes the relationship between interior and shell, object and space; and it elaborates 'the marvellous' and 'compulsive beauty' as espoused by Andre Breton. The haunted house, the cabinet of curiosities, the ruined castle, the cage, the cave, the box, the labyrinth, the bell jar and the womb are among the uniquely surreal habitats explored. Shaped by the irrational and the subversive, the flip side of the modernist paradigm of the functional, rational dwelling, "The Surreal House" is ripe for discovery. Mirroring the surrealist love of poetic juxtaposition, the project brings together works by artists such as Edward Hopper, Marcel Duchamp, Giorgio de Chirico, Man Ray, Max Ernst, Rene Magritte, Joseph Cornell and Salvador Dali. A surreal legacy is to be found in the interiors of little-known Italian architect and designer, Carlo Mollino; Frederick Kiesler's model for "The Endless House, 1957-59"; sculptures by Louise Bourgeois and Rebecca Horn; and, installations by Edward Kienholz and Ilya Kabakov. Contemporary architecture is represented by the work of Rem Koolhaas and Diller & Scofidio among others. A manifesto for a poetic reading of the house, "The Surreal House" reflects on the unquestionable importance of the dwelling, the cradle of our being, in the imaginative realm. This richly illustrated account brings together a host of commentators and historians, and accompanies a major exhibition. Exhibition: Barbican Art Gallery 10 June - 17 September 2010.
