Îïèñàíèå: In many Asian cities, groundwater is not only the source of domestic water but also an important resource for industrial development, making better management of groundwater resources essential for sustainable development.
Îïèñàíèå: Coastal zones form a huge variety of natural environments, providing rich resources to humans. They are the place where active interaction occurs between land-based activities and ocean environments. They have attracted human population to form mega cities and economic developments on the coasts, which in turn has caused tremendous pressures on the natural environment. The Asia and Pacific region is a center of such dynamics. It is home to the world’s largest region of coral reefs and mangroves. It accommodates two-thirds of the world’s human population and its economic activities have the highest growth rate in the world. Ongoing degradation of the environment resulting from deforestation, desertification, and over-harvesting is becoming a matter of great concern, as floods and droughts occur as a result of this degradation. The Asia-Pacific also forms part of the ‘Pacific Rim of Fire’ and is, therefore, vulnerable to earthquakes and tsunamis, as the world is aware of after the Sumatra earthquake tsunami on 26 December 2004. Threats of global environmental change such as climate change and sea-level rise will superpose on such problems. Therefore, appropriate policies and measures are needed for the coastal management, both for the local and global trends. This book gives an overview of the state-of-the-art understanding on the drivers, state, and responses to the coastal environmental changes in the Asia and Pacific region. It will provide excellent perspectives for what is and will be going on in the region to researchers, students, policy makers, coastal managers and other stakeholders.

Îïèñàíèå: This book is a comprehensive document visualizing the future of built environment from a multidisciplinary dimension, with special emphasis on the Indian scenario. The multidisciplinary focus would be helpful for the readers to cross-refer and understand others' perspectives. The text also includes case studies substantiating theoretical research. This method of composition helps the book to maintain rational balance among theory, research and its contextual application. The book comprises selected papers from the National Conference on Sustainable Built Environment. The chapters provide varied viewpoints on the core issues of urbanization and planning. This compilation would be of interest to students, researchers, professionals and policy makers.
Îïèñàíèå: This set of conference proceedings provide a package of stimulus ideas, development strategies, and initiatives on such themes as: environmental issues; environmental practices; environmental policy and legislation; sustainable development.
Îïèñàíèå: A comprehensive collection of contributions from the Middle East and Japan, which deals with pressing problems concerning sustainability in arid zones, with the accent on environmental science and engineering.

Îïèñàíèå: Most Volumes In The Environmental Economics Literature Consider The Environment To Be A Public Good And Hence Write Out A Role For The Private Sector In A Source Of Supply. Yet There Is Ample Evidence Of The Private Sector Being Involved, Driven Both By Profit And Altruism. This Book Will Provide The Necessary Conceptual Base For The Inclusion Of The Private Sector In The Environmental Protection Supply Equation And Deliver An Extensive Set Of Examples In A Wide Range Of Contexts. In An Economic Climate Where Governments Are Attempting To Reduce Expenditures, The Increased Role For The Private Sector Will Be Readily Embraced By Policy Makers. The Aim Of The Book Is To Establish The Principles Of Markets In The Provision Of Environmental Protection And To Provide An Extensive Experience-Based Set Of Contexts In Which The Private Sector Has Acted To Enhance The Supple Of Environmental Goods And Services. These Contexts Will Include Both Pure-Private Sector Initiatives In Terrestrial, Aquatic And Marine Ecosystems And Public-Private Sector ‘Joint Initiatives’ Such As Payment For Environmental Services (Pes) Schemes.
Îïèñàíèå: Though separated by thousands of miles, the United States and Australia have much in common. Geographically both countries are expansive-the United States is the fourth largest in land mass and Australia the sixth-and both possess a vast amount of natural biodiversity. At the same time, both nations are on a crash course toward environmental destruction. Highly developed super consumers with enormous energy footprints and high rates of greenhouse-gas emissions, they are two of the biggest drivers of climate change per capita. As renowned ecologists Corey J. A. Bradshaw and Paul R. Ehrlich make clear in Killing the Koala and Poisoning the Prairie, both of these countries must confront the urgent question of how to stem this devastation and turn back from the brink. In this book, Bradshaw and Ehrlich provide a spirited exploration of the ways in which the United States and Australia can learn from their shared problems and combine their most successful solutions in order to find and develop new resources, lower energy consumption and waste, and grapple with the dynamic effects of climate change. Peppering the book with humor, irreverence, and extensive scientific knowledge, the authors examine how residents of both countries have irrevocably altered their natural environments, detailing the most pressing ecological issues of our time, including the continuing resource depletion caused by overpopulation. They then turn their discussion to the politics behind the failures of environmental policies in both nations and offer a blueprint for what must be dramatically changed to prevent worsening the environmental crisis. Although focused on two nations, Killing the Koala and Poisoning the Prairie clearly has global implications-the problems facing the United States and Australia are not theirs alone, and the solutions to come will benefit by being crafted in coalition. This book provides a vital opportunity to learn from both countries' leading environmental thinkers and to heed their call for a way forward together.
Îïèñàíèå: The Global Programme of Research on Climate Change Vulnerability, Impacts and Adaptation (PROVIA) aims to meet a growing demand for knowledge on climate change vulnerability, impacts and adaptation by providing clear technical guidance that combines robust science with explicit consideration of user needs at the local, national and international levels, in both developed and developing countries. This document updates and improves existing guidance, discussing key issues at each stage of the adaptation cycle and covering the wide array of approaches, methods and tools available to address them. The resulting guidance should be useful to researchers, adaptation practitioners, planners and policy-makers alike.
