Описание: Neuropsychopharmacology is a relatively new subject area in the neurosciences. It is a field of study that describes the effects of drugs from the molecular to the behavioural level and requires integration and synthesis of knowledge from various disciplines including neuroanatomy, physiology, molecular biology, pharmacology and the behavioural sciences. The principal aims of this book are to provide students with a clear understanding of CNS disorders and an appreciation of how basic and clinical research findings can be translated into therapeutics. After an introduction to the subject area, the remaining chapters are focused on reviewing the mainpsychiatric and neurological disorders that are covered in most undergraduate courses. They are discussed in terms of their clinical symptoms, epidemiology, pathology, aetiology, underlying neurobiological and neurochemical mechanisms, pharmacotherapy, adjunctive nonpharmacological treatments and clinical outcomes. Each chapter of the book is a ‘stand–alone’ chapter and is written in a clear, accessible style. • A clearly–written, accessible introduction to neuropsychopharmacology. • Covers a range of CNS–related conditions and disorders and discusses them from both basic and clinical perspectives showing how these converge in providing the rationale for their treatments. • Chapters are ‘stand–alone’ and do not need to be read sequentially. • Includes a list of references and suggestions for further reading. Written by an author with many years teaching and research experience, this textbook will prove invaluable for students of pharmacy, pharmacology and the medical sciences needing a truly integrated introduction to this exciting field.

Описание: Introduction to Neuropsychopharmacology expands on the molecular and cellular foundations of the classic Biochemical Basis of Neuropharmacology, Eighth Edition (Cooper, Bloom, and Roth) by now including the behavioral methods used to study psychoactive drugs in experimental animals and in humans. Authored by four founders of modern neuroscience, this concise and comprehensive text covers the current series of medications used to treat diseases of the brain and nervous system--both psychiatric and neurologic--as well as legal and illegal recreational drugs and the neuroscientific information that explains how these medications act on the brain from the molecular to the clinical level. The text ranges from drugs that affect the mood and behavior to hypnotics, narcotics, anticonvulsants, and analgesics.

Thoroughly updated and completely reorganized for a sharper clinical focus, the Fifth Edition of this world-renowned classic synthesizes the latest advances in basic neurobiology, biological psychiatry, and clinical neuropsychopharmacology. The book establishes a critical bridge connecting new discoveries in molecular and cellular biology, genetics, and neuroimaging with the etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of the full spectrum of neuropsychiatric disorders. Nine sections focus on specific groups of disorders--disorders of development; schizophrenia and related disorders; anxiety and stress disorders; affective disorders; Alzheimer's and other dementias; substance use disorders; impulsive and compulsive disorders; movement disorders and paroxysmal disorders; and chronobiology and sleep disorders. Each group of disorders is discussed in detail, including clinical course, genetics, neurobiology, neuroimaging, and current and emerging therapeutics. Four sections cover neurotransmitter and signal transduction, emerging methods in molecular biology and genetics, emerging imaging technologies and their psychiatric applications, and drug discovery and evaluation.
