Описание: There is a growing conflict between modern and postmodern social theorists. Nicos Mouzelis examines this relationship and suggests that there is not a clear divide between modern and postmodern theories. He seeks to show the continuity between the theories and how their perspectives can be brought together.

Описание: The background to this study is the growth of academic interest in the state after the 1950s. Theorising of the state has not remained static. There has, in recent decades, been a proliferation of approaches that have redefined our understanding of political power and the state. However, there are no generic studies, of the type that are commonplace for social theory, that cover recent analytical developments in theories of the state. This text fills this gap by comparing different contemporary approaches to the state. These contemporary state theories have philosophical and theoretical antecedents that can be traced to post-classical social and political thought: their influences can be traced to feminism, poststructuralism, cultural theory, network analysis rather than to Marx, Weber or Durkheim, although this is far from being an exclusive and water-tight distinction. These new theoretical currents have debunked and challenged many cosy academic assumptions about the state, had become rooted in social and political thought. They have done this through the use of innovative theoretical concepts and an original analytical vernacular. These challenges have, in some quarters, been portrayed as attempts to abandon or jettison the state from academic analysis. This is far from the truth. New approaches have endeavoured to demystify or even deconstruct the state but not disavow the contemporary state from social theory.

Описание: What is universalism and is it relevant for contemporary social science? Daniel Chernilo answers these questions by considering key sources in natural law theory and modern social and political thought from Hobbes to Habermas. His work will engage students of sociology, social and political theory and moral philosophy.
Professor Rex's controversial book concerns not only those who are professional sociologists but all thinking people who live in the modern world. One of the objects of sociology is to give 'power to the people', to make a contribution to the understanding of political problems. Rex writes from a deep conviction that sociology is a subject whose insights should be made available to the great mass of the people, so that they may liberate themselves from the mystification of social reality that is continually and routinely presented to them through the media, by those who exercise power and by those who have influence.
The book is dedicated to St Augustine and Franz Fanon, both of whom, Rex points out, were conscious of living in an age which was embarking on a new barbarism, but had the courage to use their intellects to help understand the possibility of a better future. Rex continues in this tradition, and his main preoccupations are reflected in the present book. It includes a discussion of the problem of social knowledge, an analysis of the basic problems of theory building, and, with the aid of concepts derived from Max Weber, an attempt to understand the major problems of the first, second and third worlds. The author also looks at social structures and moral perspectives, and discusses the vocation of a sociologist in a collapsing civilisation. The book is certain to stimulate debate, both in sociological and political fields and more generally, and is also a serious contribution to the discussion of the methodology and purposes of sociology.
