Описание: "Operation Iraqi Freedom" began on 20 March 2003 and has become perhaps one of the most controversial conflicts of modern warfare. Thousands of US Marines were deployed into Iraq, and their aim was to topple the dictatorship government and liberate the Iraqi people. This book examines the US marines who were involved in one of the major battles of this operation, the battle for An Nasiriyah, covering everything from enlistment and to their hard-won victory.
It also covers their amphibious tractors AMTRACs with Mk-19 grenade launchers and their preparations for potential chemical warfare.
Описание: After the attacks on 11 September 2001, Apache units made significant contributions to the Coalition campaign against Taliban and al-Qaeda forces in Afghanistan. Functioning as the 'killer' part of US Army Hunter-killer teams, Apaches sought out and brought overwhelming firepower to bear on Taliban and al-Qaeda forces, as well as providing direct support to Coalition troops on the ground. Apaches spearheaded the advance of the 3rd infantry and the 101st airborne divisions into Iraq, engaging in some of the heaviest fighting along the western axis of advance.
Weather and enemy fire took a heavy toll on Apaches operating in Western Iraq, but the resilience and flexibility of the Apache was central to the success of this campaign.
Описание: The Hornet units waged war in northern Iraq from the carrier decks of the USS Harry S Truman and USS Theodore Roosevelt from off the coast of Turkey. The conflict for these squadrons was very different from the campaign fought in southern Iraq, working almost exclusively with clandestine Special Forces teams from the US Army, Marine Corps, Navy SEALs, British and Australian SAS, and Kurdish guerrillas. This book tells the story of the first Navy Reserve unit to be mobilised since the Korean War and their role in the northern Iraqi campaign.

It follows the story of decolonisation and the history of the Ghana-Togo borderlands, demonstrating that engagement with specific African-language texts is indispensable to the study of Africa and Africans in global history.

Описание: Like other countries in the Middle East and North Africa, Moroccans were inspired by the events in Tunisia and Egypt in 2011. Nine days after the ousting of President Hosni Mubarak in Egypt, thousands of Moroccans began protesting in the capital of Rabat on February 20. However, unlike other countries, Moroccans did not call for the overthrow of the king or the regime. Instead, Moroccan protesters initially demanded reforms to the constitution, and, specifically, a transition from an executive monarchy to a democratic parliamentary monarchy.Drawing upon narratives from the primary activists involved in the protest, Badran examines the Moroccan movement to understand why it failed to escalate in the same way that others in the region did. He finds that the state’s strategy of offering a series of reforms along with limited repression eventually ended the protest movement. Badran develops a framework to analyze how internal social movement dynamics along with regime strategies and regional events led to successful, and relatively peaceful, demobilization. Based on nine months of fieldwork, Killing Contention deepens our understanding of modern political movements and the complicated factors that lead to their demise.

Lockhart traces the branches of several generations of black families, their histories merging, the memories of their grandparents miseries fading yet not forgotten. Her carefully limned descriptions of the land the profusion of flora and the turning of the seasons are masterful. Through fully rounded characters and lyrical prose, Lockharts novel teaches some hard lessons about mans inhumanity to man."- Kathryn Lang, former editor at Southern Methodist University Press"The characters in Elizabeths Field are clearly defined and the environment carefully re-created so that we feel we are indeed stepping into the past, actually viewing people behind the gauze curtains of long ago. Weaving the present with the past, Lockhart brings us face-to-face with how slavery has continued to impact people on the Shore. Описание: In mid-1990s South Africa, apartheid ended, Nelson Mandela was elected president, and the country's urban black youth developed kwaito--a form of electronic music (redolent of North American house) that came to represent the post-struggle generation. In this book, Gavin Steingo examines kwaito as it has developed alongside the democratization of South Africa over the past two decades. Tracking the fall of South African hope into the disenchantment that often characterizes the outlook of its youth today--who face high unemployment, extreme inequality, and widespread crime--Steingo looks to kwaito as a powerful tool that paradoxically engages South Africa's crucial social and political problems by, in fact, seeming to ignore them.
Politicians and cultural critics have long criticized kwaito for failing to provide any meaningful contribution to a society that desperately needs direction. As Steingo shows, however, these criticisms are built on problematic assumptions about the political function of music. Interacting with kwaito artists and fans, he shows that youth aren't escaping their social condition through kwaito but rather using it to expand their sensory realities and generate new possibilities. Resisting the truism that "music is always political," Steingo elucidates a music that thrives on its radically ambiguous relationship with politics, power, and the state.
