The new edition of an introductory text that teaches students the art of computational problem solving, covering topics ranging from simple algorithms to information visualization.
This book introduces students with little or no prior programming experience to the art of computational problem solving using Python and various Python libraries, including PyLab. It provides students with skills that will enable them to make productive use of computational techniques, including some of the tools and techniques of data science for using computation to model and interpret data. The book is based on an MIT course (which became the most popular course offered through MIT's OpenCourseWare) and was developed for use not only in a conventional classroom but in in a massive open online course (MOOC). This new edition has been updated for Python 3, reorganized to make it easier to use for courses that cover only a subset of the material, and offers additional material including five new chapters.
Students are introduced to Python and the basics of programming in the context of such computational concepts and techniques as exhaustive enumeration, bisection search, and efficient approximation algorithms. Although it covers such traditional topics as computational complexity and simple algorithms, the book focuses on a wide range of topics not found in most introductory texts, including information visualization, simulations to model randomness, computational techniques to understand data, and statistical techniques that inform (and misinform) as well as two related but relatively advanced topics: optimization problems and dynamic programming. This edition offers expanded material on statistics and machine learning and new chapters on Frequentist and Bayesian statistics.

Описание: Introduction to Time Series Using Stata provides a step-by-step guide to essential timeseries techniques—from the incredibly simple to the quite complex—and, at the same time, demonstrates how these techniques can be applied in the Stata statistical package. The emphasis is on an understanding of the intuition underlying theoretical innovations and an ability to apply them. Real-world examples illustrate the application of each concept as it is introduced, and care is taken to highlight the pitfalls, as well as the power, of each new tool.
Описание: The first chapter of the book introduces the definitions of category and functor and discusses diagrams, duality, initial and terminal objects, special types of morphisms, and some special types of categories, particularly comma categories and hom-set categories.
Описание: Before the development of lasers, all available light sources, whether used in laboratories or found in nature, generated light which underwent uncontrollable fluctuations inherent in the emission process. Such fluctuations are detrimental to many applications. This effect is almost completely suppressed in laser radiation, making it possible to use lasers for a variety of applications. The underlying theory of fluctuating optical fields is known as coherence theory. Another manifestation of the fluctuations is the so-called phenomenon of polarization. This book is the first to provide a unified treatment of these two aspects of statistical optics, made possible by very recent discoveries, largely due to the author of this book. This will be of great interest to graduate students and researchers in physics and engineering in optical communications, the propagation of laser beams through fibers and through the turbulent atmosphere, and optical image formation. Each chapter contains problems to aid self-study.
Understanding Language Structure, Interaction, and Variation is an introduction to the study of language and applied linguistics for students who have had a minimum of exposure to the discipline of linguistics. Using clear, easy-to-understand explanations and examples, this text avoids the in-depth theoretical coverage found in texts written for those who specialize in linguistics or SLA. As a result, this book is perfect for students whose chosen fields require them to be acquainted with the ways language works--such as future teachers, psychologists, sociologists, and anthropologists--but who do not intend to become linguists. The text is also suitable for English or ESL/EFL teachers who need a reference volume about various aspects of language, particularly as it applies to teaching. Each chapter includes research projects and further readings.
The third edition of Understanding Language Structure, Interaction, and Variation features a new design and reorganization. All content has been significantly revised and updated. Each chapter also debunks a common language myth and now incorporates exercises that, for prior editions, appeared in a supplementary workbook. Extra practice for students is available online, as is additional materials for teachers. (There is no workbook for the third edition.)
Описание: This volume brings together perspectives on social identityand peace psychology to explore the role that categorization plays in both conflictand peace-building. To do so, it draws leading scholars from across the worldin a comprehensive exploration of social identity theory and its application tosome of the world’s most pressing problems, such as intrastate conflict, uprising in the middle east, the refugee crisis, global warming, racism and peace building. A crucial theme of thevolume is that social identity theory affects all of us, no matter whether weare currently in a state of conflict or one further along in the peace process. The volume is organized into two sections. Section 1 focuseson the development of social identity theory. Grounded in the pioneering workof Dr. Henri Tajfel, section 1 provides the reader with a historical backgroundof the theory, as well as its current developments. Then, section 2 bringstogether a series of country case studies focusing on issues of identity acrossfive continents. This section enablescross-cultural comparisons in terms of methodology and findings, and encouragesthe reader to identify general applications of identity to the understanding ofpeace as well as applications that may be more relevant in specific contexts.Taken together, these two sections provide a contemporary and diverse accountof the state of social identity research in conflict situations and peacepsychology today. It is evident thatany account of peace requires an intricate understanding of identity both as acause and consequence of conflict, as well as a potential resource to beharnessed in the promotion and maintenance of peace. Understanding Peace and Conflict Through Social Identity Theory: ContemporaryGlobal Perspectives aims to helpachieve such an understanding and as such is a valuable resource to thosestudying peace and conflict, psychologists, sociologists, anthropologists, public policy makers, and all those interested in the ways in which socialidentity impacts our world.
