Описание: The American Civil War was one of the last wars in which generals often led from the front, risking death at the head of their men. It was a war of larger-than-life characters, generals who earned colourful reputations and strong opinions among their soldiers and colleagues. This book outlines the careers and characters - and illustrates the appearance, in their authentic uniforms - of famous Union commanders who fought in the Western theatre of operations, including Grant, Kilpatrick, Sherman, Wilson, McPherson and nearly 20 more.

Описание: The commanders who led the opposing armies of the American War of Independence (1775-1783) came from remarkably different backgrounds. They included not only men from Britain and America, but from Germany, France and Spain as well. Some were from the great families of the Old World, while others were frontiersmen or farmers in the New World. Despite their differing origins, all were leaders in the events that led to the establishment of the United States of America. This book details the appearance, careers and personalities of the commanders on both sides. It covers such famous figures as George Washington and Lord Cornwallis along with less well-known men such as Admiral Suffren and Bernando de Galvez.

Описание:
Commanders is a collection of biographies about American generals. It takes a look at American history from the Civil War to the Gulf War by telling the stories of the generals commanding the wars - from Lee to Schwarzkopf.
Written as popular history, each general is individually described. Author Lennart Svensson does everything from telling anecdotes, reflecting on culture, war and history, to musing over operational details, meticulously narrating each general's story. Commanders provides "good stories, well told" in the genre of the historical essay. At the end of the book there is also a chapter examining topics such as the mirroring of American wars in literature and film.
As Svensson says in the introduction: "these are war stories, told by the fireside with a glass of whisky in the hand."
Описание: Protagonists for an Empire The Seven Years War as it was fought in the New World is known today as the French and Indian War. The significance of the global conflict of which it was a part is now often underestimated, but its outcome essentially decided which nation-indeed which language-would be the most dominant for centuries to come. The British and Colonial forces were led by a number of notable commanders, but one, Major-General James Wolfe, is perhaps the most well known. He was a remarkable figure, slight, frail and in his late twenties when the war was declared, though he had already seen campaigning in the Jacobite Rebellion, the War of Austrian Succession and at Louisbourg by the time of his notable victory at Quebec. His opponent, one of the most notable French military commanders of his time, Louis-Joseph de Montcalm, achieved notable success in his campaigns in America, but in 1759, after the British had momentously scaled the Heights of Abraham at Quebec, he was brought to battle by Wolfe and the French were so decisively beaten that the action essentially cost them the continent. This book traces the careers of these two distinguished soldiers who both lost their lives at the Battle of Quebec. Originally published separately these two short accounts have been brought together in a single good value edition. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.
In Soldiers of a Different Cloth, New York Times best-selling author and military historian John Wukovits tells the inspiring story of thirty-five chaplains and missionaries who, while garnering little acclaim, performed extraordinary feats of courage and persistence during World War II. Ranging in age from twenty-two to fifty-three, these University of Notre Dame priests and nuns were counselor, friend, parent, and older sibling to the young soldiers they served. These chaplains experienced the horrors of the Death March in the Philippines and the filthy holds of the infamous Hell Ships. They dangled from a parachute while descending toward German fire at Normandy and shivered in Belgium’s frigid snows during the Battle of the Bulge. They languished in German and Japanese prison camps, and stood speechless at Dachau.
Based on a vast collection of letters, papers, records, and photographs in the archives of the University of Notre Dame, as well as other contemporary sources, Wukovits brings to life these nearly forgotten heroes who served wherever duty sent them and wherever the war dictated. Wukovits intertwines their stories on the battlefronts with their memories of Notre Dame. In their letters to their superior in South Bend, Indiana, they often asked about campus, the Grotto, and the football team. Their love for Notre Dame helped buttress them during their wartime tribulations, and their return to campus was akin to a warm homecoming. Soldiers of a Different Cloth will fascinate and engage all readers interested in the history of World War II and alumni, friends, and fans of the Fighting Irish.
Shortly after the Civil War ended, David Power Conyngham, an Irish Catholic journalist and war veteran, began compiling the stories of Catholic chaplains and nuns who served during the war. His manuscript, Soldiers of the Cross, is the fullest record written during the nineteenth century of the Catholic Church's involvement in the war, as it documents the service of fourteen chaplains and six female religious communities, representing both North and South. Many of Coyngham's chapters contain new insights into the clergy during the war that are unavailable elsewhere, either during his time or ours, making the work invaluable to Catholic and Civil War historians. The introduction contains over a dozen letters written between 1868 and 1870 from high-ranking Confederate and Union officials, such as Confederate General Robert E. Lee, Union Surgeon General William Hammond, and Union General George B. McClellan, who praise the church's services during the war. Chapters on Fathers William Corby and Peter P. Cooney, as well as the Sisters of the Holy Cross, cover subjects relatively well known to Catholic scholars, yet other chapters are based on personal letters and other important primary sources that have not been published prior to this book.
Unpublished due to Conyngham's untimely death, Soldiers of the Cross remained hidden away in an archive for more than a century. Now annotated and edited so as to be readable and useful to scholars and modern readers, this long-awaited publication of Soldiers of the Cross is a fitting presentation of Conyngham's last great work.
