Описание: In July 1993, Nirvana was the biggest band in the world, and Kurt Cobain was subject to an intense level of celebrity and public scrutiny. In New York City to play the famed Roseland Ballroom and promote their new album In Utero, Cobain and Nirvana were photographed by Jesse Frohman and Cobain gave a candid interview to Jon Savage for an article in the Observer. Only nine months later, Cobain killed himself. It was the last formal photo shoot Nirvana ever did, and one of the last major interviews Cobain ever gave. Twenty years after his death, they are published here together for the first time since the Observer article, including previously unpublished material, and accompanied by new commentary from Frohman and Savage about that day, and an essay by pop culture maven Glenn OBrien on what it all might have meant. Frohmans 100-plus photographs, including contact sheets, get to the heart of one of the most beloved bands of all time, at the height of their success and the moment when everything was starting to unravel. We see Cobain as he was just months before his death, by turns feral and refined, posing on his own, goofing around with his band mates, engrossed in his music and always ambivalent about the spotlight. Savages interview reveals an optimistic side of Cobain seemingly at odds with his public image, and particularly poignant as we look back on his life. This book offers a powerful, moving portrait of Kurt Cobain and will be an important contribution to the literature of rock and roll.
Описание: From its origins at Bodh Gaya on the plains of northern India, we travel up into the Himalaya of Ladakh, where Buddhism thrived and split in the five different sects. Our journey takes us to Nepal, historically a receptive home for Buddhism, to Tibet in Exile in Dharamshala and to Sikkim and Bhutan paying homage to the sacred sites of Mahayana Buddhism along the way. We venture along the silk route into the mountainous region of Xinjiang in China and to the largest monastery in the Buddhist world at Labrang in Gansu Province, home to the Yellow Hat sect. We visit the Longman Caves and the legendary Shaolin Monastery, with its extraordinary Kung Fu monks, before eventually embarking for Korea and Japan to trace Tantric Buddhism. There we sample the tranquility of Zen temples and the fresh mountain and sea air of the most sacred pilgrim sites. We follow the story of how the once precarious belief emerged as Theravada Buddhism and found a haven in Sri Lanka before progressing eastwards to Burma and on into southeast Asia, as far as central Java. We explore the exquisite temples of Luang Prabang in Laos, Angkor Wat in Cambodia, and Sukhothai in Thailand, where Buddhist art reached a certain zenith. This is journey of spiritual, as well as visual, enlightenment as we meet Theravada Buddhist pilgrims along the way. Finally, we traverse the Tibetan plateau to reach the fabled capital of Lhasa, with its spiritual centre of the Jokhang Temple, and the iconic Potala Palace, the abandoned home of HH the Dalai Lama. Maps with reference to the photographs will guide you along the routes. The illuminating text by Denis Gray provides an authoritative perspective of Buddhism in 21st century Asia and assists in navigating the reader through the book s journey. "

Описание: Shortly before Gauguin made his first Tahitian journey in 1891, he spent nearly two years in the remote Breton fishing village of Le Pouldu. Seeking creative
isolation in a "primitive" setting, he pursued his art accompanied by several followers. One of them was the Dutch painter Meyer de Haan, who was able to pay the living expenses in Le
Pouldu and was also knowledgeable in literary and philosophical matters that fascinated Gauguin.
Their association resulted in some of Gauguin's most remarkable works,
including the Wadsworth Atheneum's symbolist portrait of de Haan inscribed "Nirvana". This and the rich variety of paintings and sculpture by Gauguin produced in 1889-1890 are the
focus of this beautiful book. Gauguin and de Haan settled into an inn at Le Pouldu run by an attractive unwed mother named Marie Henry, who began a liaison with de Haan despite
the fact that he was a sickly hunchback.
The intensity of relations between Gauguin and de Haan is reflected in many of the works, including frescoes, which they installed in
the inn. Gauguin's time in Le Pouldu was crucial to the advancement of his art, and the vivid Breton subjects and personality of Meyer de Haan remained in his imagination to reappear
even during his later Tahitian period. In the book several distinguished experts draw on previously unavailable sources to examine in depth the history of this period, Gauguin's
with de Haan, their interest in religion and exotic cultures, and the meaning of the many innovative symbolist works they produced.
This book is published in conjunction with
an exhibition at the Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford, Connecticut, from 26th January to 29th April 2001.
