Описание:

One of the biggest problems with modern democracy is that most of the public is usually ignorant of politics and government. Many people understand that their votes are unlikely to change the outcome of an election and dont see the point in learning much about politics. This creates a nation of people with little political knowledge and little ability to objectively evaluate what they do know.

The second edition of Democracy and Political Ignorance fully updates its analysis to include new and vital discussions on the implications of the Big Sort for politics, the link between political ignorance and the disproportionate political influence of the wealthy, assessment of proposed new strategies for increasing political knowledge, and up-to-date survey data on political ignorance during recent elections. Ilya Somin mines the depths of the current state of ignorance in America and reveals it as a major problem for democracy. He weighs various options for solving this problem, provocatively arguing that political ignorance is best mitigated and its effects lessened by decentralizing and limiting government. People make better decisions when they have stronger incentives to acquire relevant information—and to use it wisely.

Описание:

A remarkably funny book written by a remarkable pair of collaborators.--New York Times

Ostap Bender, the grand strategist, is a con man on the make in the Soviet Union during the New Economic Policy (NEP) period. He's obsessed with getting one last big score--a few hundred thousand will do--and heading for Rio de Janeiro, where there are a million and a half people, all of them wearing white pants, without exception.

When Bender hears the story of Alexandr Koreiko, an undercover millionaire--no Soviet citizen was allowed to openly hoard so much capital--the chase is on. Koreiko has made his millions by taking advantage of the wide-spread corruption and utter chaos of the NEP, all while serving quietly as an accountant at a government office and living on 46 rubles a month. He's just waiting for the Soviet regime to collapse so he can make use of his stash, which he keeps hidden away in a suitcase.

Ilya Ilf (1897-1937) and Evgeny Petrov (1903-1942) were the pseudonyms of Ilya Arnoldovich Faynzilberg and Evgeny Petrovich Katayev, a pair of Soviet writers who met in Moscow in the 1920s while working on the staff of a newspaper that was distributed to railway workers. The foremost comic novelists of the early Soviet Union (invariably referred to as Ilf & Petrov), the pair collaborated together for a dozen years, writing two of the most revered and loved Russian novels, The Twelve Chairs and The Golden Calf, as well as various humorous pieces for Pravda and other magazines. Their collaboration came to an end following the death of Ilya Ilf in 1937--he had contracted tuberculosis while the pair was traveling the United States researching the book that eventually became Little Golden America.

Описание: Based in New York, Ilya Kabatov is considered the most important Russian artist to have emerged in the late-20th century. His installations are after akin to theatrical "mise-en-scenes", presenting a cramped communal apartment or a flooded art museum as though they are comedies on human frustration and doomed aspirations. Boris Groys, art critic and philosopher, surveys the artist's long career, analyzing its philosophical and formal dimensions in terms of art history, as well as the artist's biography. David A. Ross, Director of the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, discusses the artist's bridging of eastern and western contemporary art practices. Curator at the Tate Gallery of Modern art, Iwona Blazwick concentrates on the artist's contribution to the Skulptur Projekte Munster 1997, "Looking up. Reading the words". Anton Checkov's short story, "The Steppe", mirrors Kabakov's own, uniquely Russian blend of irony and tragedy. The artist's writings, which include a short text on contemporary art in the former Soviet Union, an illustrated fairy-tale and an article on Cezanne complete this monograph. The book is part of a series of studies of important artists of the late-20th century. Each title offers a comprehensive survey of the artist's work, providing analyses and multiple perspectives on contemporary art and its inspiration.
