Описание: When slavery was abolished in 1880, Sao Paulo, Brazil, subsidized the immigration of workers from southern Europe and Japan. Faced with a worldwide coffee market and abundant land for expansion, native planters developed a package of incentives to attract workers, in contrast to the coercive labor systems historically common in other plantation systems. By the 1930s a clear majority of the small and medium-sized coffee farms were owned by first-generation immigrants.Originally published 1980.A UNC Press Enduring Edition -- UNC Press Enduring Editions use the latest in digital technology to make available again books from our distinguished backlist that were previously out of print. These editions are published unaltered from the original, and are presented in affordable paperback formats, bringing readers both historical and cultural value.

Описание: Scholars, journalists, and policymakers have long argued that the 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act dramatically reshaped the demographic composition of the United States. In A Nation of Immigrants Reconsidered, leading scholars of immigration explore how the political and ideological struggles of the so-called "age of restriction"--from 1924 to 1965--paved the way for the changes to come. The essays examine how geopolitics, civil rights, perceptions of America's role as a humanitarian sanctuary, and economic priorities led government officials to facilitate the entrance of specific immigrant groups, thereby establishing the legal precedents for future policies. Eye-opening articles discuss Japanese war brides and changing views of miscegenation, the recruitment of former Nazi scientists, a temporary workers program with Japanese immigrants, the emotional separation of Mexican immigrant families, Puerto Rican youth's efforts to claim an American identity, and the restaurant raids of conscripted Chinese sailors during World War II. Contributors: Eiichiro Azuma, David Cook-Martín, David FitzGerald, Monique Laney, Heather Lee, Kathleen López, Laura Madokoro, Ronald L. Mize, Arissa H. Oh, Ana Elizabeth Rosas, Lorrin Thomas, Ruth Ellen Wasem, and Elliott Young.

Описание: This work is a continuation of Brinkman's previous books, Quincy, Illinois, Immigrants from M nsterland, Westphalia, Germany, Volumes I and II. This book lists the German immigrants in Quincy, who came from the Emsland, Oldenburger M nsterland and Osnabr cker Land. Quincy's German immigrants came from many different areas in Germany, including Baden, Westphalia, Hanover, Oldenburg, East Frisia, Hesse, Bavaria, Thuringia and Wuertemberg. The majority of Quincy's German immigrants were Niederdeutsch (from northwestern Germany): 1,100 are covered in this work and 1,500 from the author's previous work. The author's preliminary research has identified an additional 2,200 persons who are known to have immigrated to Quincy from the Westphalian regions of Paderborn, Arnsberg and especially Herford/Bielefeld. Hundreds more came here from East Frisia. Biographical entries include: date and place of birth, surname, given name, date of marriage, emigration, town in Germany, death in Quincy, occupation, residence, migration, and sources. This work contains an addendum (additions and corrections) to Quincy, Illinois, Immigrants from M nsterland, Westphalia, Germany, Vol. II. Corrected and expanded entries used the same number as in the original. Maps and a surname index add to the value of this work. 2015, 51/2x81/2, paper, index, 528 pp.

Описание: Costa Rica After Coffee explores the political, social, and economic place occupied by the coffee industry in contemporary Costa Rican history. In this follow-up to the 1986 classic Costa Rica Before Coffee, Lowell Gudmundson delves deeply into archival sources, alongside the individual histories of key coffee-growing families, to explore the development of the co-op movement, the rise of the gourmet coffee market, and the societal transformations Costa Rica has undergone as a result of the coffee industry's powerful presence in the country. While Costa Rican coffee farmers and co-ops experienced a golden age in the 1970s and 1980s, the emergence and expansion of a gourmet coffee market in the 1990s drastically reduced harvest volumes. Meanwhile, urbanization and improved education among the Costa Rican population threatened the continuance of family coffee farms, because of the lack of both farmland and a successor generation of farmers. As the last few decades have seen a rise in tourism and other industries within the country, agricultural exports like coffee have ceased to occupy the same crucial space in the Costa Rican economy. Gudmundson argues that the fulfillment of promises of reform from the co-op era had the paradoxical effect of challenging the endurance of the coffee industry.

Описание:

Founded in the late 1960s on Chile’s Pacific coast, the Open City (la Ciudad Abierta) has become an internationally recognized site of cutting-edge architectural experimentation. Yet with a global reputation as an apolitical collective, little has been discussed about the Open City’s relationship with Chilean history and politics. Politics of the Dunes explores the ways in which the Open City’s architectural and urban practice is devoted to keeping open the utopian possibility for multiplicity, pluralism, and democratization in the face of authoritarianism, a powerful mode of postcolonial environmental urbanism that can inform architectural practices today.
