Описание: What does it mean to be middle class in contemporary global cities? What do the middle classes do to these cities and what do these cities do to the middle classes? Do the middle classes engage in social mix or are they focused on `people like us`? Based on comparative study this book explores middle-class identities across Paris and London.
The blood, DNA, flesh and physicality of our bodies are taken for granted by countless humans and envied by many others. We, the children of Yggdrasil (world tree) to whom Midgard (physical reality) was given at the time of our creation, hold deep and powerful secrets within ourselves and within our physical beings.
The Body (Lik), the Energy Body (Hamr) and the Shadow (Sal) form the great foundation of your inner universe: your own creation. Understanding and mastering these parts of our Self provides you with such wonderful gifts that there are those in Creation who positively fear the prospect of this self-realisation.
The deep-seated secrets of biological awareness, shapingand intending are but a few of the wonders which await within. Mysteries of materialisation, realisation through inheritance andmysteries of your very blood will be revealed to you.
Learn all about their practical applications, their secrets and how to expand your Self through their proper use. Learn how to ground and materialise runic powers through them, how to manifest by means of these three parts of your Self and learn why mankind is the envy of Creation.

Originally published in 2003. The fruit of a lifetime's reading and thinking about literature, its delights and its responsibilities, this book by acclaimed poet and critic Anthony Hecht explores the mysteries of poetry, offering profound insight into poetic form, meter, rhyme, and meaning. Ranging from Renaissance to contemporary poets, Hecht considers the work of Shakespeare, Sidney, and Noel; Housman, Hopkins, Eliot, and Auden; Frost, Bishop, and Wilbur; Amichai, Simic, and Heaney. Stepping back from individual poets, Hecht muses on rhyme and on meter, and also discusses St. Paul's Epistle to the Galatians and Melville's Moby-Dick. Uniting these diverse subjects is Hecht's preoccupation with the careful deployment of words, the richness and versatility of language and of those who use it well.
Elegantly written, deeply informed, and intellectually playful, Melodies Unheard confirms Anthony Hecht's reputation as one of our most original and imaginative thinkers on the literary arts.

Описание: How a Film Theory Got Lost and Other Mysteries in Cultural Studies Robert B. Ray Foreword by James Naremore Challenges accepted ideas about film and cultural studies. In the 1920s, when film criticism was as new as the cinema itself, a particular way of thinking about the movies developed in Paris. The cinema, this theory suggested, turns on photography's automatism, the revolutionary fact that for the first time in human history a perfect representation of the world can be produced by accident. Moreover, the camera's gaze has the potential to transform ordinary objects—a telephone, a letter on a desk, a woman's face—into spellbinding images, swarming with details whose precise appeal remains unpredictable. By the 1930s, this theory of photog?nie (photogenia) had vanished from most serious writing about film. Why did this disappearance occur? In this collection of essays, Robert B. Ray discusses this disappearance and other mysteries like it: Why did photography and the detective story originate at exactly the same time? Why has some of the most prominent academic writing about the cinema resisted anything but "scientific" accounts of the movies? What counts as "knowledge" in film studies or any intellectual discipline? What do the French Impressionists have in common with the Sex Pistols? How did Douglas Sirk's critically ignored melodramas become "subversive critiques of bourgeois ideology"? How did the fate of Sirk's movies help us understand postmodernism and the avant-garde? In taking up these questions, Ray's essays challenge certain ideas about film and cultural studies, while arguing for a mode of writing about the movies and experimental art that would respect the abidingly mysterious effect of their images and sounds. Robert B. Ray, Director of Film and Media Studies and Professor of English at the University of Florida, is author of A Certain Tendency of the Hollywood Cinema 1930–1980 and The Avant-Garde Finds Andy Hardy. He is also a member of The Vulgar Boatmen, whose records include You and Your Sister, Please Panic, and Opposite Sex. Contents Foreword by James Naremore Impressionism, Surrealism, and Film Theory: Path Dependence, or How a Tradition in Film Theory Gets Lost The Bordwell Regime and the Stakes of Knowledge Snapshots: The Beginnings of Photography Tracking How to Start and Avant-Garde How to Teach Cultural Studies The Best Way to Understand Postmodernism The Mystery of Edward Hopper Film and Literature Conclusion

Описание:
Taking cultural theorist Michel de Certeau's notion of 'the everyday' as a critical starting point, this book considers how fashion shapes and is shaped by everyday life. Looking historically for the imprint of fashion within everyday routines such as going to work or shopping, or in leisure activities like dancing, the book identifies the 'fashion system of the ordinary', in which clothing has a distinct role in the making of self and identity.
Exploring the period from 1890 to 2010, the study is located in London and New York, cities that emerged as as socially, ethnically and culturally diverse, as well as increasingly fashionable. The book re-focuses fashion discourse away from well-trodden, power-laden dynamics, towards a re-evaluation of time, memory, and above all history, and their relationship to fashion and everyday life. The importance of place and space - and issues of gender, race and social class - provides the broader framework, revealing fashion as both routine and exceptional, and as an increasingly significant part of urban life. By focusing on key themes such as clothing the city, what is worn on the streets, the imagining and performing of multiple identities by dressing up and down, going out, and showing off, Fashion and Everyday Life makes a unique contribution to the literature of fashion studies, fashion history, cultural studies, and beyond.
