Описание: This new edition of Norman Davies's classic study of the history of Poland has been revised and fully updated with two new chapters to bring the story to the end of the twentieth century. The author adopts a sceptical stance towards all existing interpretations of Polish history and attempts to bring a strong dose of common sense to his theme. He presents the most comprehensive survey in English of this frequently maligned and usually misunderstood country.

Описание:

Goniadz Yizkor Book Summary

This Yizkor (Memorial) Book for the Jewish Community of Goniadz, in Poland is over 500 pages long. It contains information on the town's institutions, organizations, buildings, and families as recounted by survivors and prewar emigrants in addition to first-hand reports ofsurvivors of the massacre and of Jews who joined the partisans, family histories of extended families of the town and all the photographs and illustrations from the original Yizkor Book.

Jews may have been living in Goniadz as early as 1597 when the town was granted the right to have Jews settle there. Goniadz became a lively trading center for lumber and grains, horses and cattle. At the beginning of the twentieth century there were about 2,600 Jews or about 67% of the population. The Jewish Goniadz was very lively and interesting. The small Jewish population was very active, established many parties and clubs and gave to the world outstanding intellectuals in many fields, both Jewish and general. This vibrant small Jewish community was best known for an intellectual and social culture which included creating the first Hebrew public school in Poland and an active Zionist community. By the end of the First World War only 1,135 Jews or about 43% of the population still resided in Goniadz.

This Memorial-Book portrays to a great extent the many-sided life of Goniadz before its destruction, as told by pre-war emigrants. Several people who survived the holocaust have given us a heartrending description of the horrors and destruction they witnessed. Their stories, and those of the efforts of those fortunate enough to escape, are presented in this volume. Today there are many descendants of Goniadz living around the world and several have contributed to create this translation.

"Let this Goniadz memorial book be a living memorialto the annihilated-lost splendor of the past - for us and for our children, for eternity."

(Fishl Yitzhaki, page 806)

Описание: Stawiski, Poland is a small town in northeastern Poland situated on the Dzierzbia River. The town was established in the early 15th century and over the years had multiple rulers. Napoleon's march across Europe to Russia took him through Stawiski. The town was a commercial center known for furs, fabrics and hats. The Great Synagogue of Stawiski was built in 1739; it was destroyed by the Nazis during World War II. The town first came under Soviet occupation and in June 1941 the Germans seized control of the town. A month later the Nazis forced many of the town's Jewish residents march into the forest where they were murdered; today there is a mass grave of 700 people at the site. Other Jews from Stawiski were sent to the transport camp of Bogusze. Those surviving that camp were transported to Treblinka and Auschwitz. Once a town with over 2000 Jews, no Jews live in Stawiski today. This book serves as a memorial to the Jewish community of Stawiski that no longer exists. It will be of interest to descendants of the town's Jewish community, scholars of Polish, World War II and Jewish history desiring primary source material. Описание: This collective intellectual biography examines generations of deeply religious thinkers whose faith drove them into public life, including Karol Wojtyla, future Pope John Paul II, and Tadeusz Mazowiecki, the future prime minister who would dismantle Poland's Communist regime.

Seeking to change the way we understand the Catholic Church, World War II, the Cold War, and communism, this study centers on the idea of "revolution." It examines two crucial countries, France and Poland, while challenging conventional wisdom among historians and introducing innovations in periodization, geography, and methodology. Why has much of Eastern Europe gone back down the road of exclusionary nationalism and religious prejudice since the end of the Cold War? Piotr H. Kosicki helps to understand the crises of contemporary Europe by examining the intellectual world of Roman Catholicism in Poland and France between the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939 and the demise of Stalinism in 1956.

Описание: Jews were living in Dębica as early as 1673. They settled in Dębica after being banished from the nearby town of Pilzno. At the beginning of the twentieth century there were about 2200 Jews or about 55% of the population. This vibrant small Jewish community was best known for two independent Jewish communities with two separate rabbinates and communal institutions (for Old Dębica and New Dębica). By the late 1930's there were approximately 3300 Jews still living in Dębica. The Jews were lawyers, doctors, teachers, bakers, butchers, and tailors. When the Nazi forces occupied Dębica in 1939 through 1944, the Jews were imprisoned in the local ghetto to perform forced labor in Pustk w and were finally sent to the Belżec death camp. Approximately 13,000 Jews from the Dębica county were murdered in the Holocaust, including about 3000 Jews from the city of Dębica. A few survivors escaped, survived the camps and were hidden by Poles. About 50-100 people survived the war. Their stories along with the rich history of Dębica when it was a living part of world Jewry prior to 1939 are described in this volume. Read the details in the survivors' own words as they remember and bring to life the once vibrant Jewish community of Dębica. Today there are no Jews living in Dębica, Poland. This book serves as a memorial to the Jewish community of Dębica, Poland. It will be of interest to descendants and researchers of the town. Описание: There once was a Jewish community in the ancient Polish town of Sierpc. As hundreds of other Jewish communities in Poland, Jewish Sierpc is no more. On the eighth day of the Second World War, September 8, 1939, the Germans occupied Sierpc, burnt the synagogue, and remained until they were expelled by the Red Army in January, 1945. Before the start of the Second World War and the Holocaust, Sierpc had a population of 10,051, more than 30% of which was Jewish. Sierpc was nestled in the valley and surrounded by mountains. Three rivers flowed within the boundaries of Sierpc; the river that was the namesake of the district, the Sierpianitza River, bisected the two parts of the town. The town was linked by four bridges; the bridge with the greatest traffic was on the Jewish Street. The surrounding countryside was known for its fertile fields and many orchards, as well as for its weaver establishments, breweries, tanneries, and vinegar factories. In this Sierpc Memorial Book, the Jewish community is vividly brought to life by the first-hand social, historical and political accounts by its former residents and by the numerous photographs. The exemplary writing makes this book unique and a must for all descendants of its residents and researchers of the history of the Sierpc Jewish Community. Описание: This is the translation of the Memorial (Yizkor) Book of Jewish community of Grajewo, Poland. 358 pages, 8.5" by 11," hard cover, including all photos and other images. Jews have been living in Grajewo, in the province of Bialystok, Poland since the late 17th century. The 1765 census counted 83 Jewish people and by 1857, the number had grown to 1,457 comprising 76% of the town's population. By 1921, the percentage of Jews had decreased to 39%. In 1933 anti-Jewish outbreaks occurred in Grajewo. During the Soviet occupation, between September 1939 and June 1941, Jewish businesses were nationalized. The invastion of Grajewo on 22 June 1941 by the Nazis marked the beginning of the devastation and horrors thrust upon the Jewish population. Within a few months, 1,600 to 2,000 Jews had been sent to the transit camp at Bogosza and on to the extermination camps at Treblinka and Auschwitz. The United Grayever (Grajewo) Relief Committee memorialized the Jewish Community of Grajewo by publishing the original Yiddish Yizkor book in 1950. Now it is available in English for current and future generations to learn of the rich history of this community. Grajewo is located at 53 39' North Latitude and 22 27' East Longitude 114 mi NNE of Warsaw in Poland.
