Описание: TThe scale of international investment in peace-building in Bosnia has been unprecedented. A plethora of international institutions, including the EU, the IMF, the OHR, the OSCE, the World Bank and the United Nations, as well as many development agencies, set about piecing the country together, a process cushioned by generous flows of aid. However, despite the massive international commitment in time, resources and effort, a decade and a half later Bosnia's peace is at best paralyzed. War remains a risk because of the myriad of unresolved issues, zero-sum politics and incompatible positions of rival ethno-national leaders. In the face of paralysis, international officials repeat the mantra that there is no alternative to Bosnia's European path and urge the country's leaders to see sense, to temper their rhetoric and to carry out internationally approved reforms. To no avail. Christopher Bennett argues that the failure of peace-building is the failure of the 'liberal peace model'. Policy-makers have focused on 'what should be' in terms of trying to reproduce Western liberal democracy, rather than 'what is' in Bosnia, where ethno-national security concerns remain critically important to most people. Bennett's book offers a comprehensive analysis of stalled peace process. He concludes by proposing a paradigm shift in strategy aimed at ensuring a self-sustaining ethno-national security for all of its peoples.

Описание: Bosnia-Herzegovina is a small country thats had an amazing influence on the history of Europe and the world. It formed the heart of Shakespeares Illyria. For centuries, its people were a mainstay of the Roman Empire, providing it with elite troops and several of its greatest emperors. In Bosnian Phoenix, author Miljan Peter Ilich offers a novel and enlightening perspective on the astounding historical importance of Bosnia. He emphasizes the resilience of the country throughout its evolution from its ancient historical roots. Its territory has fluctuated, but the basic geographical extent of what is defined as Bosnia and Herzegovina has been remarkably stable for a long time. Ilich offers an understanding of the conflictual relations in Bosnia by analyzing the inadequately recognized centuries-long significance of that nation in regional and European affairs. For about a century, Bosnia took the lead in defending Europe from Turkish invasions and was a champion of religious liberty within the Christian world. Ilich maintains that since Bosnia and Herzegovina has long been a multiethnic society, its history aids in the understanding of social evolution in other multiethnic societies. The Bosnian story will be meaningful to people in other countries since, with increased globalization, the entire world is fast becoming one huge, complex, multiethnic society. Bosnian Phoenix addresses a host of myths about Bosnia and presents insight into this country and what it offers to the world.

Описание: This book develops a novel approach to peace and conflict studies, through an original application of the philosophy of Jacques Derrida to the post-conflict politics of Northern Ireland and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Based on new readings of the peace agreements and the post-conflict political systems, the book goes beyond accounts that present a static picture of 'fixed divisions' in these cases. By exploring how formal electoral politics and the informal political spheres of artistic, cultural, judicial and protest movements already contest the politics of division, the book argues that the post-conflict political systems in Northern Ireland and Bosnia and Herzegovina are in a process of deconstruction. The text adds to the Derridean lexicon by developing the idea of a 'deconstructive conclusion', which challenges historical understandings of conflicts at the same time as challenging their consequences in the present. The study provides a critical contribution to peacebuilding and International Relations literature, by demonstrating how Derridean concepts can be utilised to provide fresh understandings of conflict and post-conflict situations, as well as allowing for political interventions to be made into these processes.
