Описание:

On April 6, 1922, in Paris, Albert Einstein and Henri Bergson publicly debated the nature of time. Einstein considered Bergson s theory of time to be a soft, psychological notion, irreconcilable with the quantitative realities of physics. Bergson, who gained fame as a philosopher by arguing that time should not be understood exclusively through the lens of science, criticized Einstein s theory of time for being a metaphysics grafted on to science, one that ignored the intuitive aspects of time. "The Physicist and the Philosopher" tells the remarkable story of how this explosive debate transformed our understanding of time and drove a rift between science and the humanities that persists today.

Jimena Canales introduces readers to the revolutionary ideas of Einstein and Bergson, describes how they dramatically collided in Paris, and traces how this clash of worldviews reverberated across the twentieth century. She shows how it provoked responses from figures such as Bertrand Russell and Martin Heidegger, and carried repercussions for American pragmatism, logical positivism, phenomenology, and quantum mechanics. Canales explains how the new technologies of the period such as wristwatches, radio, and film helped to shape people s conceptions of time and further polarized the public debate. She also discusses how Bergson and Einstein, toward the end of their lives, each reflected on his rival s legacy Bergson during the Nazi occupation of Paris and Einstein in the context of the first hydrogen bomb explosion.

"The Physicist and the Philosopher" reveals how scientific truth was placed on trial in a divided century marked by a new sense of time."

Описание: Over the past decade, researchers from different academic disciplines have paid increasing attention to the productivity of online environments. The ethical underpinnings of research in such settings, however, remain contested and often controversial. As traditional debates have been reignited by the need to respond to the particular characteristics of technologically-mediated environments, researchers have entered anew key debates regarding the moral, legal and regulative aspects of research ethics. A growing trend in this work has been towards the promotion of localized and contextualized research ethics - the suggestion that the decisions we make should be informed by the nature of the environments we study and the habits/expectations of participants within them. Despite such moves, the relationship between the empirical, theoretical and methodological aspects of Internet research ethics remains underexplored. Drawing from ongoing sociological research into the practices of media cultures online, this book provides a timely and distinctive response to this need. This book explores the relationship between the production of ethical stances in two different contexts: the ethical manoeuvring of participants within online media-fan communities and the ethical decision-making of the author as Internet researcher, manoeuvring, as it were, in the academic community. In doing so, the book outlines a reflexive framework for exploring research ethics at different levels of analysis; the empirical settings of research; the theoretical perspectives which inform the researcher’s objectification of the research settings; and the methodological issues and practical decisions that constitute the activity as research. The analysis of these different levels develops a way of thinking about ethical practice in terms of stabilizing and destabilizing moves within and between research and researched communities. The analysis emphasizes the continuities and discontinuities between both research practice and online media-fan activity, and social activity in on and offline environments.

Описание: In her classic work Gender Trouble - a book that changed the face of gender studies - Judith Butler presented the idea of "gender performativity"-the notion that we all 'do' gender in some way. In her new collection of essays, Butler clarifies the critical task of "undoing gender" when its terms are produced in the service of regulatory and punitive power. Undoing Gender addresses the regulation of sexuality and gender that takes place in psychology, aesthetics, and social policy. These essays revisit the problem of kinship in light of new challenges to the family form, interrogate the meaning and purposes of the incest taboo, and challenge the ways in which intersexuality and transsexuity are pathologized. The volume also includes a reading of Willa Cather, a speculation on the millennial goals of feminist theory, as well as a cultural analysis of sexual and racial panic in the censorship of the arts. Undoing Gender deepens issues introduced by Butler's earlier scholarship: the materiality of the body, the meaning and instrument of human agency, the relation between power and the psyche or power and the body, psychic triangulation and the incest taboo, the political limits and conditions of psychoanalysis, and the ramifications of rights discourse for those who are, by definition, unauthorized to make use of those terms. The volume ends with a reflection on the way that philosophy is, and must be, engaged with cultural questions of how power works. Undoing Gender will be essential reading for all serious readers interested in gender and sexuality, and in questions of philosophy, language, and the body.

Описание: The first book on Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt's extraordinary relationship with the King and Queen of England
In June of 1939, just three months before the outbreak of the Second World War, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth of Great Britain paid a visit to the United States--the first time a British monarch had ever set foot on American soil--at a time when American isolationists were opposed to helping Britain fight the Nazis. Their hosts were Franklin and Eleanooosevelt, who honored them with a state dinner in Washington and an intimate sojourn at the Roosevelt estate in Hyde Park, New York, where the King and Queen were served hot dogs at a famous picnic. For the first time, The Roosevelts and the Royals tells the story of the friendship that developed between the two couples--and nations. The book traces the early years and development of all four colorful and complex main characters, and it shows how the challenging Roosevelt-Windsor alliance survived even after the war. Filled with extraordinary anecdotes, some of them shared with the author by the Queen Mother, the book is illustrated with rare photographs.
Will Swift (New York, NY) has written on royal history for twenty years in Majesty magazine and other publications. He curated a New York exhibition celebrating the Queen Mother's 100th birthday.
