Описание:

First published in 1979, this is a very welcome reissue of Kathleen Raines seminal study of William Blake - Englands only prophet. He challenged with extraordinary vigour the premises which now underline much of Western civilization, hitting hard at the ideas of a naive materialist philosophy which, even in his own day, was already eating at the roots of English national life. In his insistence that mental things are alone real, Blake was ahead of his time. Materialist views are now challenged from various quarters; the depth psychologies of Freud and Jung, the study of Far Easter religion and philosophy, the reappraisal of myth and folk lore, the wealth of psychical research have all prepared the way for an understanding of Blakes thought. We are ready to acknowledge that in attacking the sickness of Albion Blake penetrated to the inner worlds of man and explored them in a way that is quite unique.

Dr Raine, who has made a long study of Blakes sources, presents him as a lonely powerful genius who stands within the spiritual tradition of Sophia Perennis, the Everlasting Gospel. From the standpoint of this great human Norm, our immediate past described by W.B. Yeats as the three provincial centuries, is a tragic deviation; catastrophic, as Blake believed, in its spiritual and material consequences. Only now do we possess the necessary knowledge to understand William Blake and the ever-growing number of people who turn to him surely justifies his faith in the eternal truths he strove to communicate.

Описание:

Ovid, Rome's most cynical and worldly love poet, has not until recently been highly regarded among Latin poets. Now, however, his reputation is growing, and this volume is an important contribution to the re-establishment of Ovid's claims to critical attention.

This collection of essays ranges over a wide variety of themes and works: Ovid's development of the Elegiac tradition handed down to him from Propertius, Catullus and Tibullus; the often disparaged and neglected Heroides; the poetry of Ovid's miserable exile by the Black Sea; the poetic diction of the Metamorphoses, Ovid's lengthy mythological epic which codified classical myth and legend, and has strong claims to be considered, with the exception of Virgil's Aeneid, Rome's greatest epic poem; humour and the blending of the didactic and elegiac traditions in the Ars Amatoria and Remedia Amoris. Finally, Ovid's incomparable influence in the Middle Ages and sixteenth century is examined.

Описание:

In this title, first published in 1984, Peter Morton argues that in late Victorian Britain a group of novelists and essayists quite consciously sought and found ideas in post-Darwinian biology that were susceptible to imaginative transformation. The period between 1860 and 1900 was a time of great confusion in biology; the natural selection hypothesis was in retreat before its acute critics, and no extension of evolutionary theory to human affairs was too bizarre to attract its quota of enthusiasts. Writers capitalised on this prevailing uncertainty and used it to their own artistic or polemic ends. A fascinating and interdisciplinary title, this reissue will interest students of late Victorian literature, as well as historians of biological theory between "The Origin of Species "and Mendel.
