Описание:

Wang Zhiyuan was born in 1958 in Tianjin, China, and graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in Beijing. He moved to Australia in 1989 to earn his Master of Fine Arts in Sydney and worked there for over a decade, also serving as chief adviser for the prestigious White Rabbit Collection of contemporary Chinese art. He currently lives and works in Beijing. For Wang Zhiyuan, the things we discard or reject are vital and often lovelier or even uglier than we once thought. His boldly artistic style, using enormous and colorful metaphors, often parodies the contradictions in globalized consumption, market insatiability, politicized language, and social decay. His work is part of major collections in the Asia-Pacific region.

Описание: Accompanying one of the most anticipated exhibitions of the past few years, this catalogue captures the grand scale and vibrant colour of Hockney's work of the twenty-first century. In the past decade, having returned to England after years on the California coast, David Hockney has focused his attention on both landscapes and portraits, as well as still lifes all the while maintaining his fascination with digital technology. The resulting work is an extravagance of colour and light, ranging in dimension from billboard- to letter-size, and is the basis for a thrilling new book that promises to become one of the most popular in recent memory. This lush and impeccably produced catalogue features more than 200 full-color works of art from museum collections and Hockney's private studio, including such major new works as The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate and Bigger Yosemite. It also includes multiple-image galleries (spread over gatefolds) of some of his iPad drawings and self-portraits, plus film stills from the artist's 'Cubist' movies. Hockney's own insight into this latest chapter of his career is found in an illuminating essay on perspective and is accompanied by thoughtful commentaries by renowned critic Lawrence Weschler and art historian Sarah Howgate. The exhibition is curated by Gregory Evans.

Описание: does drawing make one `see things clearer, and clearer, and clearer still`, as Hockney suggests? What significance do different media - from a Lascaux cave wall to an iPad - have for the way we see? What is the relationship between the images we make and the reality around us? This title deals with these questions.

Описание:

The exploding cost of health care in the United States is a source of widespread alarm. Similarly, the upward spiral of college tuition fees is cause for serious concern. In this concise and illuminating book, the well-known economist William J. Baumol explores the causes of these seemingly intractable problems and offers a surprisingly simple explanation. Baumol identifies the "cost disease" as a major source of rapidly rising costs in service sectors of the economy. Once we understand that disease, he explains, effective responses become apparent.

Baumol presents his analysis with characteristic clarity, tracing the fast-rising prices of health care and education in the United States and other major industrial nations, then examining the underlying causes, which have to do with the nature of providing labor-intensive services. The news is good, Baumol reassures us, because the nature of the disease is such that society will be able to afford the rising costs.
