Описание: The evocation of narrative as a way to understand the content of consciousness, including memory, autobiography, self, and imagination, has sparked truly interdisciplinary work among psychologists, philosophers, and literary critics. Even neuroscientists have taken an interest in the stories people create to understand themselves, their past, and the world around them. The research presented in this volume should appeal to researchers enmeshed in these problems, aswell as the general reader with an interest in the philosophical problem of what consciousness is and how it functions in the everyday world.

Описание: Peter Goldie explores the ways in which we think about our lives-our past, present, and future-in narrative terms. He draws on work in philosophy, psychology, history, and literature, and argues that although there may not be such a thing as a narrative self, having a narrative sense of self is at the heart of what it is to understand ourselves.

Описание: Anthony Rudd presents a striking new account of the self as an ethical, evaluative being. He draws on Kierkegaard`s thought to present a case for an ancient and currently neglected view: that the tensions which are constitutive of selfhood can only be reconciled through the understanding of the self as guided by an objective Good.

Описание: S. Min Chun discusses how to read Old Testament narrative from an ethical perspective. He employs a linguistic and literary approach to Biblical interpretation, using close study of the narrative of Josiah in the book of Kings, and argues that such an approach makes the most of the genre-characteristics of Old Testament narrative.

Описание: Do fictions depend upon imagination? Derek Matravers argues against the mainstream view that they do, and offers an original account of what it is to read, listen to, or watch a narrative. He downgrades the divide between fiction and non-fiction, largely dispenses with the imagination, and in doing so illuminates a succession of related issues.

Описание: Medieval writers such as Chaucer, Abelard, and Langland often overlaid personal story and sacred history to produce a distinct narrative form. The first of its kind, this study traces this widely used narrative tradition to Augustine`s two great histories: Confessions and City of God.
Описание: Challenges the commonly held notion that language is what makes us uniquely human. This book argues that what distinguishes us in the animal kingdom is our capacity for recursion: the ability to embed our thoughts within other thoughts.
Описание: This analysis of early Buddhist thought discusses a perspective where no permanent idea of the "Self" is accepted. Instead, the idea of the changing and potent mental processes is developed. The text explores issues relating to the not-Self teaching.
Описание: In the last two decades, interest in narrative conceptions of identity has grown exponentially, though there is little agreement about what a "life-narrative" might be. In connecting Kierkegaard with virtue ethics, several scholars have recently argued that narrative models of selves and MacIntyre's concept of the unity of a life help make sense of Kierkegaard's existential stages and, in particular, explain the transition from "aesthetic" to "ethical" modes of life. But others have recently raised difficult questions both for these readings of Kierkegaard and for narrative accounts of identity that draw on the work of MacIntyre in general. While some of these objections concern a strong kind of unity or "wholeheartedness" among an agent's long-term goals or cares, the fundamental objection raised by critics is that personal identity cannot be a narrative, since stories are artifacts made by persons. In this book, Davenport defends the narrative approach to practical identity and autonomy in general, and to Kierkegaard's stages in particular.
