Описание: Avodah is the first major translation of one of the most important genres of the lost literature of the ancient synagogue. Piyyut literature can teach us much about how ancient Jews understood sacrifice, sacred space, and sin. The poems are also a rich source for retrieving myths and symbols not found in the conventional Rabbinic sources.

Perhaps you have powers way beyond imagination.
Not the ability to fly, or X-ray vision, but nevertheless terrific powers, powers of empathy and kindness, the ability to make another whole, to pick up the pieces and put a man together again.
Just perhaps, just imagine.
This book of poetry, Little Worlds, is about worlds of your own creation where you personally create wonder. Using the medium of poetry - a concentrated language - Little Worlds endeavors to give us a glimpse into the magnitude of our own ability. And if it were so, what if...
What if...
What if?
Much love,
Louis Swartz

"Because this story is so well-written, we the readers follow the narrator's progress with the eagerness of a child at play." --Shirley Hershey Showalter, Author, Blush: A Mennonite Girl Meets a Glittering World, in the Foreword
When a young Mennonite girl is uprooted from her cloistered community, she pines to go back to Yoder School where learning was full of wonder and where she decided to be a teacher. Here is a story of leaving a childhood of innocence to go out into the world and to learn in new ways from different people in places that don't feel like home.
This coming-of-age memoir shows how a young Mennonite, uprooted from her community in the mountains of western Maryland, forges her identity. Pulled from the cloistered three-room Yoder School, full of Mennonite and Amish kids, she pursues her goal to become a teacher in a variety of classrooms, all unfamiliar to her, and then graduates from Antioch University, the hippie college of Yellow Springs, Ohio.
In each classroom, she searches for Yoder School, where learning was full of wonder and people seemed safe. What she finds is people whose stories differ from hers. Will she hear and try to understand and learn from these stories?
"Yoder School is an extraordinarily insightful memoir of an inter-culturally-seasoned Anabaptist educator journeying from an Amish Mennonite mountain school in Maryland through urban mazes of Michigan and beyond. Her razor-keen excellence in educational pedagogy, fusing love for students with inspiring them to learn, forms a page-turning narrative." --Richard Showalter, Columnist, Mennonite World Review; and Overseer, CMC (formerly Conservative Mennonite Conference)
The Author: Enchanted by first grade at Yoder School, Phyllis Miller Swartz decided to become a teacher. But after her family moved, she wondered how to learn to be a good teacher when she often didn't have one. Still she pursued her goal. After graduating from Antioch College, she taught school for over 30 years, from HeadStart to middle school, high school, college, and more, trying to bring the wonder of Yoder School to her students. Swartz leads Columbus Museum of Art tours, teaches part-time at Rosedale Bible College, conducts seminars, and blogs on teaching at "Apple to Apple."

Описание: Empire and Education in Africa brings together a rich body of scholarship on the history of education in colonial Africa. It provides a unique contribution to the historiography of education in different African countries and a useful point of entry for scholars new to the field of African colonial education. The collection includes case studies from South Africa, Ethiopia, Madagascar, French West Africa (Afrique Occidentale Fran?aise) and Tanzania (then Tanganyika). It will therefore prove invaluable for scholars in the histories of French, British and German colonialism in Africa. The book examines similarities and differences in approaches to education across a broad geographical and chronological framework, with chapters focusing on the period between 1830 and 1950. The chapters highlight some central concerns in writing histories of education that transcend geographic or imperial boundaries. The text addresses the relationship between voluntary societies’ role in education provision and state education. The book also deals with ‘adapted’ education: what kind of education was appropriate to African people or African contexts, and how did this differ across and between colonial contexts? Finally, many of the chapters deal with issues of gender in colonial education, showing how issues of gender were central to education provision in Africa.

Описание:
A girl deals with friendship, family, and OCD in this classic-feeling, debut middle-grade novel by Elly Swartz.
To twelve-year-old Molly Nathans, perfect is:
--The number four --The tip of a newly sharpened No. 2 pencil --A crisp white pad of paper --Her neatly aligned glass animal figurines What's not perfect is Molly's mother leaving the family to take a faraway job with the promise to return in one year. Molly knows that promises are sometimes broken, so she hatches a plan to bring her mother home: Win the Lakeville Middle School Poetry Slam Contest. The winner is honored at a fancy banquet with white tablecloths. Molly is sure her mother would never miss that. Right...? But as time passes, writing and reciting slam poetry become harder. Actually, everything becomes harder as new habits appear, and counting, cleaning, and organizing are not enough to keep Molly's world from spinning out of control. In this fresh-voiced debut novel, one girl learns there is no such thing as perfect. Praise for Finding Perfect:
With middle school friendships and family relationships at its heart, this novel offers an empathetic guide to coping with a mental health issue. . .Swartz adds to the growing list of fiction titles that raise awareness of differences and promote acceptance; a strong purchase for most middle grade and middle school collections. --School Library Journal Swartz renders Molly's decline into full-blown OCD visceral and sympathetic; readers with similar tendencies will relate while others, like her friends, will recognize the pain of seeing someone in need but not being able to help. . .This is one for preteens struggling with the desire for perfection in this imperfect life. --The Bulletin
