Описание: Younger-Generation Korean Experiences in the United States: Personal Narratives on Ethnic and Racial Identities compares the formation of the ethnic identities of two distinct cohorts of Korean Americans. Through personal essays, the book explores four influential factors of ethnic identity: retention of ethnic culture; participation in ethnic social networks; links to the mother country and its global power and influence; and experiences with racial prejudice and discrimination. The essays reflect certain major changes between the two cohorts-the first growing up in the 1960s and early 1970s and the second growing up during the 1980s and early 1990s- and proves how an increase in the Korean population and in the number of ethnic organizations helped the second-cohort Korean Americans retain their cultural heritage in a more voluntary, and therefore meaningful, way. This book's combination of first-hand experiences and critical analysis makes it a valuable resource for studies of ethnicity, culture, identity formation, and the Asian-American experience.
Описание: In Sex Trafficking in the United States, Andrea J. Nichols explores the dynamics of sex trafficking from the angles of survivors, perpetrators, facilitators, and the social service and criminal justice professionals who work in the field. She examines common risk factors for those who become victims, and the barriers they face when they try to leave. She also looks at how and why sex traffickers enter the industry, the prevalence of bought sex, and the criminal justice policies that target them. Sex trafficking in this book is analyzed from neoliberal, abolitionist, feminist, criminological, and sociological perspectives, and Nichols accounts for the role of race, ethnicity, immigrant status, LGBTQ identities, age, sex, and intellectual disability in heightening the risk of trafficking and how social services and the criminal justice and health care systems can best respond. With recommendations for practice and policy as well as suggestions for cultural change, Sex Trafficking in the United States is essential for understanding the mechanics of an exploitive industry and for curbing its spread among at-risk populations.
Past studies have suggested that offenders desist from crime due to a range of factors, such as familial pressures, faith based interventions or financial incentives. To date, little has been written about the relationship between desistance and racialisation. This book seeks to bring much needed attention to this under-researched area of criminological inquiry.
Martin Glynn builds on recent empirical research in the UK and the USA and uses Critical Race Theory as a framework for developing a fresh perspective about black men's desistance. This book posits that the voices and collective narrative of black men offers a unique opportunity to refine current understandings of desistance. It also demonstrates how new insights can be gained by studying the ways in which elements of the desistance trajectory are racialised.
This book will be of interest both to criminologists and sociologists engaged with race, racialisation, ethnicity, and criminal justice.
