Описание: Social psychology has made great advancements in understanding how our romantic relationships function and to some extent, dissolve. However, the social and behavioral sciences in much of western scholarship often focus exclusively on the more positive aspects of intimate relationships--and less so on more controversial or unconventional aspects. The goal of this volume is to explore and illuminate some of these underrepresented aspects: aspects such as non-monogamy, female orgasm, sadism, and hate, that often function alongside love in intimate relationships. Ultimately, by looking at intimate relationships in this way, the volume contributes to and advocates for a more holistic and comprehensive view of intimate relationships. Throughout the volume, contributors from social, clinical, and evolutionary psychology cover love and hate from a variety of (sometimes opposing) perspectives. The first section, covers love and the changing landscape of intimate relationships. Its chapters review the current literature and research of understudied topics like non-monogamy, female orgasm, sexual fantasies, and the viewpoint of love as something other than positive. The second section explores hate and how hate can operate in intimate relationships--for example, the appearance of sadistic behavior and debates the nature of hate as either a motivation or emotion. The volume concludes, by looking at ways in which the appearance of hate in relationships can be dealt with and overcome successfully. Taken together, these two sections reflect the full variety of experiences within intimate relationships. With the aim of exploring how love and hate can-and frequently do-work together, The Psychology of Love and Hate in Intimate Relationships is a fascinating psychological exploration of intimate relationships in modern times. It is an invaluable resource to academics and students specializing in psychology, gender, and sociology, including clinicians and therapists, and all those interested in increasing our knowledge of intimate relationships.

Описание: Close relationships provide a fundamental context for human behaviour and development and as such the study of close relationships has in recent years become a major theme in social psychology. This field produces rich and diverse research that can be daunting to access. Psychology of Close Relationships emphasizes original empirical investigations, as well as including conceptual papers that set the stage for relationship science or that build basic theories. Volume One: Theoretical Foundation - Why Relationships Matter focuses on basic theoretical arguments about the importance of relationships for human behaviour and demonstrations of the consequences of relationships for health and well-being. Volume Two: Attraction and Relationship Development covers the initiation and development of relationships by looking at classic processes such as similarity, proximity, familiarity and attractiveness, as well as material on friendship formation, self-disclosure, and intimacy. Volume Three: Relationship Cognition and Emotion includes articles on the emotional and cognitive processes that characterize relationships. Volume Four: Relationship Maintenance Processes delves into the processes relevant to maintaining and enhancing relationships and investigates interdependence theory, the leading approach to this topic. Volume Five: Relationship Deterioration reviews research on the nature of relationship instability and deterioration, as well as what is known about their causes and consequences.

Описание: In the extensive literature on couples and intimacy, little has been written about knowing and not knowing as people experience and understand them. Based on intensive interviews with thirty-seven adults, this book shows that knowing and not knowing are central to couple relationships. They are entangled in love, sexual attraction, trust, commitment, caring, empathy, decision making, conflict, and many other aspects of couple life. Often the entanglement is paradoxical. For example, many interviewees revealed that they hungered to be known and yet kept secrets from their partner. Many described working hard at knowing their partner well, and yet there were also things about their partner and their partner's past that they wanted not to know. This book's qualitative, phenomenological approach builds on and adds to the largely quantitative social psychological, communications and family field literature to offer a new and accessible insight into the experience of intimacy.
