Описание: Eberhard J?ngel is widely recognised as one of the most important and original theologians of the twentieth-century. Although his essays comprise some of his best critical and constructive writing, few have been available in English. These eight essays have been carefully chosen to illustrate the wide range of J?ngel's current concerns - the ontological implications of the doctrine of justification, the nature of metaphorical and anthropomorphic language, theological anthropology, Christology and ecclesiology, and natural theology.
Описание: This book presents a model of relevant cultural engagement for religious communities with its basis in John Calvin`s two kingdoms theology. Matthew J. Tuininga outlines a mode of participation in democratic politics in a way that takes faith seriously while accepting pluralism and respecting the rights of others.
Описание: This volume is a collection of essays in honour of T?bingen theologian Eberhard J?ngel, and is presented to him on the occasion of his 80th birthday. J?ngel is widely held to be one of the most important Christian theologians of the past half-century. The essays honour Professor J?ngel both by offering critical interlocutions with his theology and by presenting constructive proposals on themes in contemporary dogmatics that are prominent in his writings. The Festschrift introduces a new generation of theologians to Eberhard J?ngel and his theology. The volume also includes an exhaustive bibliography of J?ngel's writings and of secondary sources that deal extensively with his thought.

Описание: While German Lutheran theologian Eberhard Jungel (1934-) has made a number of significant contributions to contemporaneous discussions of sacramental theology, this topic has largely been ignored by interpreters of his thought. This study summarizes and evaluates, through a close reading of primary and secondary source materials, Jungel's approach to the problem of sacrament. R. David Nelson considers Jungel's claim that the word of God functions sacramentally as it addresses its hearer, and analyses his assertion that Jesus Christ is the unique and preeminent sacrament of God for the world. Progressing to an exploration of Jungel's ecclesiology, Nelson reveals Jungel's interesting approach to the question of the church's sacramentality. The volume concludes with an investigation into Jungel's doctrines of baptism and the Lord's Supper. The Interruptive Word demonstrates that Jungel consistently appeals to the category of 'interruption' for describing God's sacramental relation to the world and its actualities, concluding that the hegemony of the category of 'interruption' in Jungel's theology of sacrament raises important questions concerning its coherence and tenability.

Описание:
Widely regarded as the twentieth century's greatest theologian, Karth Barth refocused the task of Christian theology and demonstrated its relevance to every domain of human life, from the spiritual to the social to the political. It is precisely the broad sweep of Barth's theology that makes a book like The Great Passion of such great value -- a succinct yet comprehensive introduction to Barth's entire theological program. Of the many people who write on the life and thought of Karl Barth, Eberhard Busch is uniquely placed. A world-renowned expert on Barth's theology, he also served as Barth's personal assistant from 1965 to 1968. As Busch explains, one cannot fully understand Barth the theologian apart from understanding Barth the man. In this book he weaves doctrine and biography into a superb presentation of Barth's complete work. Busch's purpose in this introduction is to guide readers through the main themes of the multivolume Church Dogmatics against the horizon of our own times and problems. In ten sections Busch clearly explains Barth's views on all of the major subject areas of systematic theology: the nature of revelation, Israel and Christology, the Trinity and the doctrine of predestination, the -problem- of religion, gospel and law, creation, salvation, the Holy Spirit, ecclesiology, and eschatology. A distinctive feature of the book is the way Busch lets Barth speak for himself, often through surprising quotations and paraphrases. Busch also shows how Barth's writing should be read as a dialogue, constantly and consciously engaging other voices past and present, both inside and outside the church. Most important, The Great Passion demonstrates that Barth's thought is still remarkably helpful today.
