Описание:
In this new volume, Jan Haywood and Nao se Mac Sweeney investigate the position of Homer's Iliad within the wider Trojan War tradition through a series of detailed case studies. From ancient Mesopotamia to twenty-first century America, these examples are drawn from a range of historical and cultural contexts; and from Athenian pot paintings to twelfth-century German scholarship, they engage with a range of different media and genres.
Inspired by the dialogues inherent in the process of reception, the book adopts a dialogic structure. In each chapter, paired essays by Haywood and Mac Sweeney offer contrasting authorial voices addressing a single theme, thereby drawing out connections and dissonances between a diverse suite of classical and post-classical Iliadic receptions.
The resulting book offers new insights, both into individual instances of Iliadic reception in particular historical contexts, but also into the workings of a complex story tradition. The centrality of the Iliad within the wider Trojan War tradition is shown to be a function of conscious engagement not only with Iliadic content, but also with Iliadic status and the iconic idea of the Homeric.

Описание: The first comprehensive account of the critical and editorial reception in Renaissance Italy of the work of Dante Alighieri (1265-1321), investigating a range of responses to his work. The book covers significant topics including arguments surrounding Dante`s authority as a `classic` poet, and contemporary developments in philology, theology, science and printing.
Описание: Round Trip to Hades in the Eastern Mediterranean Tradition explores how the theme of visiting the Underworld and returning alive has been treated, transmitted and transformed in the ancient Greek and Byzantine traditions. The journey was usually a descent (katabasis) into a dark and dull place, where forgetfulness and punishment reigned, but since ‘everyone’ was there, it was also a place that offered opportunities to meet people and socialize. Famous Classical round trips to Hades include those undertaken by Odysseus and Aeneas, but this pagan topic also caught the interest of Christian writers. The contributions of the present volume allow the reader to follow the passage from pagan to Christian representations of Hades–a passage that may seem surprisingly effortless.

Описание: Despite their self-presentation as iconoclasts, the writers of the Beat Generation were deeply engaged with the classical tradition. Many of them were university-trained and highly conscious of their literary forebears, and they frequently incorporated their knowledge of Greco-Roman literature into their own subversive, experimental practice. Seeking to transcend the superficiality, commercialism, and precariousness of life in post-World War II America, the Beat writers found in their classical models both a venerable literary heritage and a discourse of sublimity through which to articulate their desire for purity.
In this volume, a diverse group of contributors explore for the first time the fascinating tensions and paradoxes that arose from interactions between these avant-garde writers and a literary tradition often seen as conservative and culturally hegemonic. With essays that cover the canonical Beat authors--such as Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, and William Burroughs--along with less well-known figures--including Kenneth Rexroth, Ed Sanders, and Diane di Prima--Hip Sublime: Beat Writers and the Classical Tradition brings long overdue attention to the Beat movement's formative appropriation of the Greek and Latin classics.

Описание: A lucid and wide-ranging book arguing that the concept of the Demiurge, or Craftsman-god, first advanced by Plato`s Timaeus, was highly influential on the many discussions of world-generation operating in Middle Platonist, Gnostic, Hermetic and Christian contexts in the first three centuries AD, until its demise in Neoplatonism.
Описание: This revisionary account of the 900-year-long history of a major poetic tradition sheds new light on poems from Beowulf to Piers Plowman and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and challenges the idea that the alliterative tradition falls into two halves divided by the Norman Conquest.
Описание: In a daring rewrite of literary history, this volume argues that the medieval poet and musician Guillaume de Machaut was the major influence in narrative craft during the late Middle Ages and long after.Examining Machaut’s series of debate poems, part of the French tradition of the “dit amoureux” (love tales), contributors highlight the genre’s authorial self-consciousness, polyvocality, and ambiguity of judgment. They contend that Machaut led the way in developing and spreading these radical techniques and that his innovations in form and content were forerunners of the modern novel.
Описание: This is the first book-length study of late classical Greek lyric poetry, combining literary-critical engagement with poems and attention to the socio-cultural forces that shaped them. It provides access to little-known texts and fills a gap in our understanding of Greek literary history between the early classical and Hellenistic periods.
Описание: Although poetry can enrich our lives and help us make sense of the human condition, many readers are intimidated by the language and literary conventions of medieval and Renaissance poetry. Keeping the needs of new readers of old poetry in mind, Goldstein introduces some of the greatest masterpieces of lyric poetry over a span of five centuries.

Описание:
This fourth volume of essays under the title The Shaping of English Poetry consolidates the work of the previous three volumes on the great subjects of English literature in the Medieval and Renaissance periods. The Norman Conquest of England built upon the rich foundation of Anglo-Saxon England but did not destroy it; thus the present volume begins with the commemoration of English heroism in The Battle of Maldon. In the late twelfth century we encounter in Chr?tien de Troyes's seminal romance Le Chevalier de la Charrete a new kind of hero in Lancelot, abject and obedient before his mistress, although Chr?tien himself is not an uncritical admirer of the sanctity of adulterous love. Hence the importance of Dante's exposition of love in Purgatorio, XVIII, which forms a background to the essays here on Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and the Parliament of Fowls. The volume concludes with essays on Chaucer's Knight's, Monk's and Nun's Priest's Tales, which form part of a long-term project to interpret the Canterbury Tales as a unified whole and not merely a series of fragments awaiting revision on Chaucer's death.

Описание: Ideas of translation and adaptation in the middle ages investigated through the lens of the Merlin tradition.
Описание: The concept of the individual or the self in the modern world is important and well-understood in many contexts. However, these ideas have mostly not been investigated in any real depth when it comes to looking at the Anglo-Saxon period, and by looking at Old English poetry in general. Some attempts have been made in recent years, but for the most part these investigations look at ideas of the self that are intangible, unknowable, and more metaphysical rather than something we can clearly define and analyze by reading literature. The current investigation remedies these issues by arguing that a unique sense of self for Anglo-Saxons may be found by looking at their surviving poetry. For the first time, there is an extended monograph on the concept of the individual outside of her community during this period in history. Finally, the conclusion demonstrates that the studies which argue that the individual was something that did not really exist until the Renaissance are unfounded and do not stand up to scrutiny.
