Описание: Chitral-an iconic episode in the history of the British Raj Anyone interested in the history of the British Empire in India and particularly of the post-mutiny Raj period will know that as the British moved into the wild mountainous country of the North West Frontier and Afghanistan they came to the limit of their influence and power on the sub continent. This was the 'burning border'-difficult if not impossible to control, occupied by fierce tribesmen ever ready to resist invaders and perpetually vulnerable to powers beyond it who might employ it as a corridor for incursions into Hindustan. This was the country of 'the Great Game, ' made famous by Kipling, where, 'two thousand pounds of education drops to a ten-rupee jezail.' Chitral, situated in what is now northern Pakistan, was a challenge to the army of the Queen Empress Victoria and remains no less so for armies who have occupied it right up to modern times. It became the location of one of those 'back against the wall' struggles of grit, resolution and heroism which have become legendary in the history of the British Army ranking with episodes such as the defence of Rorkes Drift during the Zulu War or the broken square at Abu Klea in the Sudan. An isolated fort commanded by British officers and manned by Indian Army troops was besieged by hostile tribesmen and held out under the most extraordinary hardships until eventually relieved. As hostilities flared up throughout the region small units were attacked and often annihilated until the inevitable forces of retribution could be mustered and marched to the rescue and to restore imperial 'order.' This is a riveting book -which rapidly draws the reader from one action to the next-about an extremely interesting and event filled episode of the late Victorian era. Описание: A famous Irish regiment at war The Connaught Rangers-the 88th Regiment of Foot-were popularly known as the 'Devil's Own' and have been a notable and redoubtable infantry regiment within the British Army since their creation in 1793. Principally comprised of Irishmen they had a mixed reputation as being exactly what was required on the field of battle but something of a burden to commanders on other occasions. They saw much action under Wellington during the Peninsular War and by the time the conflict in Russia broke out, in the campaign in the Crimea in the middle of the 19th century, they were once again ready to show their mettle. The author of this book was an officer in the regiment and the account in this book is based on eye witness experience. The Connaughts were in action at The Alma, Inkerman, Sevastapol and the assault on the Redan. The regiment, true to its tradition, started their campaign with a strength of 931 strong and ended it having after sustained 769 casualties as a result of battlefield deaths, wounds and disease. Описание: Colonial warfare on the Dark Continent The British Empire rapidly spread it's influence throughout the globe during the nineteenth century. Predictably these intrusions rarely found favour with the indigenous populations and so, inevitably, the imperial interests of power and commerce were reinforced by the imposition of military and naval might courtesy of the British Army and the Royal Navy. British interests in West Africa proved to be no exception to the rule and the so called 'Ashanti Wars' were fought with varying degrees of savagery and through eight campaigns from 1806 until 1900. This book is about the Third Anglo-Ashanti War which was fought during 1873-74. Garnet Wolseley, commanding a force of British, West Indian and local forces marched against the Ashanti who had invaded British territory. The campaign gained particular notoriety because it occurred during the golden age of newspaper correspondents and was covered by both G. A. Henty and Henry Morton Stanley. It made Wolseley's reputation and he became a household name. The conflict was made singular by the nature of the terrain-often thick jungle-across which it was fought and by it's exotic protagonists and this makes it a subject of particular interest for students of the colonial wars in the Victorian era. The outcome of the war was, perhaps, predictable and the British both occupied the enemy capital Kumasi and then burnt it down as an object lesson. This book is particularly useful because the author was an eyewitness to the storming of Amoaful by the Black Watch, the storming of Ordahsu by the Rifle Brigade and the fall of the capital.
