Описание: This well-illustrated and innovative book analyses convent culture in sixteenth-century Italy through the medium of three unpublished nuns’ chronicles. The book uses a comparative methodology of ‘connected differences’ to examine the intellectual and imaginative achievement of the nuns, and to investigate how they fashioned and preserved individual and convent identities by writing chronicles. The chronicles themselves reveal many examples of nuns’ agency, especially with regard to cultural creativity, and show that convent traditions determined cultural priorities and specialisms, and dictated the contours of convent ceremonial life.
Описание: This first of two volumes of Latin chronicles illustrating the reigns of Edward I (1272–1307) and Edward II (1307–27) was published in 1882. These works contain material not found in any other source for the period. The first text included here is a collection of the surviving fragments of the Annales Londonienses, much of which was destroyed by fire in 1731, but which originally provided a year-by-year narration of the events from 1194 to 1330. Despite a complete break between 1293 and 1301, it remains especially valuable for the years 1289–1316. The Annales Paulini, from the hand of a chronicler associated with St Paul's, features closely related and sometimes overlapping material dealing with the years 1307–41. The often corrupt texts were restored, edited and provided with English side-notes by William Stubbs (1825–1901), whose lengthy introduction specifies the contents of each chronicle and details the history of the transmission and publication of the manuscripts.
Описание: William Stubbs (1824–1901) was an important constitutional medievalist and Regius Professor of Modern History at Oxford. This two-volume work, published in 1864–5, was the first of his nineteen editorial contributions to the Rolls Series. It chronicles foreign diplomacy and church affairs during the reign of Richard I, whom Stubbs regarded with disdain. Volume 2 comprises a collection of letters relating to a dispute which erupted between the Archbishops Baldwin and Hubert, and the monks of Canterbury, who saw the Archbishops' attempts to establish a church and college of secular canons as a threat to their status. The correspondence, in Latin, was compiled by a certain Reginald around 1205, although only three pages can be definitively attributed to him. A chronological calendar (1185–1200) provides details of each letter in English, while Stubbs' substantial introduction contains a fascinating narrative of the history of monasticism in England.
Описание: As a young teamster on a pack-mule train, Wilfred Dudley Smithers saw the Rio Grande's Big Bend for the first time in 1916, and it captured his imagination forever. For decades thereafter he returned to Texas' last great frontier—the great bend of the Rio Grande on the Texas-Mexico border—chronicling the region and its people in words and photographs.

After half a century of photography, Smithers' superlative collection of nine thousand images ended up at the University of Texas at Austin, and in 1976 more than one hundred of these were reproduced in Chronicles of the Big Bend, a critically acclaimed work that until now has long been out of print.

The years that Smithers chronicled in the Big Bend were sometimes violent ones. Pancho Villa and Chico Cano were among the many ""bandits"" playing hide-and-seek with the U.S. Cavalry—events Smithers recorded. He was also an eyewitness to liquor-running and smuggling during Prohibition. His principal subjects, however, were the people of the Big Bend: local ranchers, Mexican American and American families, miners, Texas Rangers, and others living simple lives in this harsh and beautiful land.

With words and camera Smithers wanted to capture ""vanishing lifestyles, primitive cultures, old faces, and odd, unconventional professions. Before my camera I wanted huts, vendors, natural majesties, clothing, tools, children, old people, the ways of the border."" He also told his own life story along with that of the Big Bend.

There are illustrated chapters on the military, law enforcement, curanderos (healers), liquor smugglers, avisadores (secret-message senders), and the national park. Smithers' word sketches and black-and- white photographs capture the harsh reality and stark beauty, the dust and the mystery of the frontier era of the Big Bend that ended in 1944 when it became a national park. Chronicles of the Big Bend is a rare documentary look at a frontier region as it was known by only a few and as it will never be seen again. It is a deeply personal human portrait of the majestic Big Bend.

Описание: In this eloquent and wholly absorbing memoir, the renowned scholar Donald Keene shares more than half a century of his extraordinary adventures as a student of Japan. Keene begins with an account of his bittersweet childhood in New York; he then describes his initial encounters with Asia and Europe and the way in which his role as a Navy interpreter complicated that experience during World War II. He captures the sights, scents, and sounds of Japan as they first enveloped him and writes of his postwar travels and the well-known intellectuals who later shaped his academic career. A fascinating tale of two cultures colliding, Chronicles of My Life is also a thrilling account of the emotions and experiences that connect us all, regardless of our individual origins.
Описание: In the mid-1440s, French knight Jean de Wavrin (c.1400–c.1473) took on the monumental task of compiling the first full-length history of England, spanning almost two millennia. Wavrin, who belonged to a noble family of Artois, was a chronicler under Philip the Good and Charles the Bold, Dukes of Burgundy. During his military career, he often fought on the side of the English, and was keen to keep the kingdom as an ally. He gathered a unique collection of records and used his own first-hand observations to write a work that provides a fascinating insight into the interests and methods of a medieval historian. Part of the Rolls Series of publications of historical documents, these volumes, published between 1864 and 1891, were translated and edited by the archivist and antiquarian Sir William Hardy (1807–87), and completed by Edward L. C. P Hardy after his death.

Описание: Until now, the poet Peter Orlovsky, who was Allen Ginsberg's lover for more than forty years, has been the neglected member of the Beat Generation. Because he lived in Ginsberg's shadow, his achievements were seldom noted and his contributions to literature have not been fully recognised. Now, this first collection of Orlovsky's writings traces his fascinating life in his own words. It also tells, for the first time, the intimate story of his relationship with Ginsberg. Drawn from previously unpublished journals, correspondence, photographs and poems, Peter Orlovsky, a Life in Words, begins as Orlovsky is discharged from the Army; follows the young man through years of self-doubt and details his first meeting with Ginsberg in San Francisco from his own perspective. In never-before-heard detail, Orlovsky describes his travels around the world with Ginsberg, Kerouac, Burroughs and Corso. The book also delves into the contradictions that ultimately defined him: best known as Ginsberg's lover, Orlovsky was heterosexual and always longed to be with women; his spirit was prescient of the flower children of the sixties - especially his inclinations toward devotion and love - but in the end his use of drugs took its toll on his body and mind, silencing one of the most original and inspiring voices of his generation.
