Leviathans at the Gold Mine is an ethnographic account of the relationship between the Ipili, an indigenous group in Papua New Guinea, and the large international gold mine operating on their land. It was not until 1939 that Australian territorial patrols reached the Ipili. By 1990, the third largest gold mine on the planet was operating in their valley. Alex Golub examines how "the mine" and "the Ipili" were brought into being in relation to one another, and how certain individuals were authorized to speak for the mine and others to speak for the Ipili. Considering the relative success of the Ipili in their negotiations with a multinational corporation, Golub argues that a unique conjuncture of personal relationships and political circumstances created a propitious moment during which the dynamic and fluid nature of Ipili culture could be used to full advantage. As that moment faded away, social problems in the valley increased. The Ipili now struggle with the extreme social dislocation brought about by the massive influx of migrants and money into their valley.

Описание: A fresh, comprehensive, and critical look at the California gold rush through the lens of the daguerreotype camera
The California gold rush was the first major event in American history to be documented in depth by photography. This fascinating volume offers a fresh, comprehensive, and critical look at the people, places, and culture of that historical episode as seen through daguerreotypes and ambrotypes of the era. After gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill in 1848, thousands made the journey to California, including daguerreotypists who established studios in cities and towns and ventured into the gold fields in specially outfitted photographic wagons. Their images, including portraits, views of cities and gold towns, and miners at work in the field, provide an extraordinary glimpse into the evolution of mining culture and technology, the variety of nationalities and races involved in the mining industry, and the growth of cities such as San Francisco and Sacramento. Including numerous images published here for the first time, this book provides an extraordinary glimpse into the transformation of the American West.
A groundbreaking, breathtaking history of the Chinese workers who built the Transcontinental Railroad, helping to forge modern America only to disappear into the shadows of history until now

Описание: Nothing set the world in motion like gold. Between the discovery of California placer gold in 1848 and the nostalgic rush to Alaska fifty years later, the search for the precious yellow metal accelerated global circulations of people, goods, capital, and technologies. A Global History of Gold Rushes brings together historians of the United States, Africa, Australasia, and the Pacific World to tell the rich story of these nineteenth century gold rushes in global perspective. Gold was central to the growth of global capitalism; it whetted the appetites of empire builders, mobilized the integration of global markets and economies, profoundly affected the environment, and transformed global migration patterns. Together these essays tell the story of fifty years that changed the world.

In the 1850s, on the dusty streets of Ballarat in central Victoria, a small group of mining men ran the headquarters of the Australian gold rush. As the diggers hunted for gold, here fortune seekers built an institution at their gathering place known simply as "The Corner". Providing the capital needed to get the gold, The Corner men ushered in a period of extreme entrepreneurship in a high risk game of both mining and speculation. In doing so, they became Australia's first stockbrokers and their institution Australia's first Stock Exchange. Follow the lives of some of these men and see how they won and lost fortunes, took extraordinary risks and founded practices that are still evident today. From Ballarat to Egerton, Berringa and Daylesford, as rich is the gold heritage of Victoria, so are the stories of those that made it possible.
