Описание: In its first seven years, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) tripled trade and quintupled foreign investment among the U.S., Mexico, and Canada, increasing its share of the world economy. In 2001, however, North America peaked. Since then, trade has slowed among the three, manufacturing has shrunk, and illegal migration and drug-related violence have soared. At the same time, Europe caught up, and China leaped ahead. In The North American Idea, eminent scholar and policymaker Robert A. Pastor explains that NAFTA`s mandate was too limited to address the new North American agenda. Instead of offering bold initiatives like a customs union to expand trade, leaders of the three nations thought small. Interest groups stalemated the small ideas whileinhibiting the bolder proposals, and the governments accomplished almost nothing. To overcome this resistance and reinvigorate the continent, the leaders need to start with an idea based on a principle of interdependence. Pastor shows how this idea - once woven into the national consciousness of the three countries - could mobilize public support for continental solutions to problems like infrastructure and immigration that have confounded each nation working on its own. Providing essential historical context and challenging readers to view the continent in a new way,The North American Idea combines an expansive vision with a detailed blueprint for a more integrated, dynamic, and equitable North America.

Описание: "This book is an essential reference for scholars and students from a wide array of fields represented by Latin American and cultural studies. It provides highly authoritative entries on most of the major topics of the day."--Ignacio M. Sanchez Prado, author of Naciones Intelectuales "This text represents a fantastic resource as well as an excellent pedagogical tool for the diffusion of the main tenets of cultural studies among students and among scholars who are not specialists in Latin American cultural studies."--Ana Del Sarto, coeditor of Latin American Cultural Studies Reader "A dictionary is a book to ask questions of. Not only what each word means, but also why some are present and others are absent, and how the presences and the absences are connected. Irwin and Szurmuk's Dictionary exhaustively registers the sources and lines of development of the studies of culture in Latin America."--Nestor Garcia Canclini, writing in En torno a los estudios culturales The Dictionary of Latin American Cultural Studies is a fundamental reference for students, pedagogues, and investigators interested in understanding the terminology of the field. This comprehensive volume explains and contextualizes fifty-four key terms and theories, including some general concepts in cultural studies (e.g., body, deconstruction, ideology, postmodernism, power, queer theory) as they relate to research in Latin America, and some specific to the field of Latin American studies (e.g., anthropophagy, deterritorialization, lettered city). Each entry defines the term in question, explains its usages, discusses its etymology and the intellectuals who have made relevant contributions, and provides a bibliography of essential sources. Uniquely suited to the student or scholar struggling with translating cultural studies terminology into non-English language topics of study, originally published in Spanish, and with contributions by many of the field's foremost authorities, this dictionary is poised to become a defining text for Latin American cultural studies. Robert McKee Irwin, chair of the Cultural Studies Graduate Group and professor of Spanish at the University of California-Davis, is the author of Bandits, Captives, Heroines, and Saints: Cultural Icons of Mexico's Northwest Borderlands. Monica Szurmuk, research professor at the Institute of Latin American Literature at the University of Buenos Aires, is the author of Women in Argentina: Early Travel Narratives.
While America's relationship with Britain has often been deemed unique, especially during the two world wars when Germany was a common enemy, the American business sector actually had a greater affinity with Germany for most of the twentieth century. American Big Business in Britain and Germany examines the triangular relationship between the American, British, and German business communities and how the special relationship that Britain believed it had with the United States was supplanted by one between America and Germany.
Volker Berghahn begins with the pre-1914 period and moves through the 1920s, when American investments supported German reconstruction rather than British industry. The Nazi seizure of power in 1933 led to a reversal in German-American relations, forcing American corporations to consider cutting their losses or collaborating with a regime that was inexorably moving toward war. Although Britain hoped that the wartime economic alliance with the United States would continue after World War II, the American business community reconnected with West Germany to rebuild Europe's economy. And while Britain thought they had established their special relationship with America once again in the 1980s and 90s, in actuality it was the Germans who, with American help, had acquired an informal economic empire on the European continent.
American Big Business in Britain and Germany uncovers the surprising and differing relationships of the American business community with two major European trading partners from 1900 through the twentieth century.
