Описание: Sienkiewicz’s Bodies focuses on the work of the most popular Polish writer from the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century. It discusses the surprising success of Sienkiewicz’s writing in relation to the dissection of optimistic illusion that takes place during a reading of its cruel prose. Sienkiewicz is seen as something more than a juggler of genius in narrative prose. This conservative writer, like the modernists, knew that there was no longer any way to construct a representation of reality in a morally non-contradictory fictional discourse. The energy of his narratives and his linguistic drive disturb the order of narrative and expose the heteronomy of a superficially unified style, thus generating fissures, but never ruining the architecture of the text.

Описание: In 1975 Kapuscinski flew into Luanda in Angola, to cover the murderous civil war that had broken out after independence. This book is a record of his experiences there, of a city and a country that seemed, for a prolonged period, to have taken leave of the world, to enter a nightmare of anarchy.

Описание: The first uncensored, English-language translation of a Polish dissident poet's brave act of witness in post-World-War-II Europe.

The Polish poet Ryszard Krynicki, born in a Nazi labor camp in Austria in 1943, became one of the most prominent poets of the New Wave generation of 1968, his poetry offering what Adam Michnik has called "a strange and beautiful marriage of Joseph Conrad's heroic ethics with a great metaphysical perspective." Krynicki is the author of a body of work marked at once by the solitude of a poete maudit and solidarity with a hurt and manipulated community. Our Life Grows, published in Paris in 1978, was the first poetry collection to appear as Krynicki intended, beyond the reach of the Communist censorship that had crippled his earlier books. These poems, combining a biting wit and rigorously questioning mind with a surreal imagination, are a vital part of the story of postwar Europe.
