Описание: Fictions of Youth is a comprehensive examination of adolescence as an aesthetic, sociological, and ideological category in Pier Paolo Pasolini’s prose, poetry, and cinema. Simona Bondavalli’s book explores the multiple ways in which youth, real and imagined, shaped Pasolini’s poetics and critical positions and shows how Pasolini’s works became the basis for representations of contemporary young people, particularly Italians. From Pasolini’s own coming of age under Fascism in the 1940s to the consumer capitalism of the 1970s, youth stood for innocence, vitality, and rebellion. Pasolini’s representations of youth reflected and shaped those ideas. Offering a systematic treatment of youth and adolescence within Pasolini’s eclectic body of work, Fictions of Youth provides both a broad overview of the changing nature of youth within Italian modernity and an in-depth study of Pasolini’s significant contribution to that transformation.

Описание: This major new study takes issue both with the traditional critical view that Flaubert`s central characters are weak and with the approach adopted by a number of contemporary critics who claim that character is deliberately undermined in the interests of non-representational writing.

Описание: This book examines the phenomenon of the reappearance of characters in nineteenth-century French fiction. It approaches this from a hitherto unexplored perspective: that of the twin history of the aesthetic notion of originality and the legal notion of literary property. While the reappearance of characters in the works of canonical authors such as Honor? de Balzac and ?mile Zola is usually seen as a device which transforms the individual works of an author into a coherent whole, this book argues that the unprecedented systematisation of the reappearance of characters in the nineteenth century has to be seen within a wider cultural, economic, and legal context. While fictional characters are seen as original creations by their authors, from a legal point of view they are considered to be ‘ideas’ which are not protected and can be appropriated by anyone. By co-examining the reappearance of characters in the work of canonical authors and their reappearances in unauthorised appropriations, such as stage adaptations and sequels, this book discusses a series of issues that have shaped our understanding of authorship, originality, and property.
Описание: Balzac made a conscious effort in Comedie Humaine to multiply the reappearance, from book to book, of some of his characters. This careful analysis of nearly six hundred reappearing characters shows that some appear only briefly, in no significant role; others play important parts; some become principals in later action.

Описание: Three questions of novelistic form preoccupied Fyodor Dostoevsky throughout his career: how to build suspense, how to end a narrative effectively, and how to distribute attention among major and minor characters. For Dostoevsky, these were much more than practical questions about novelistic craft; they were ethical questions as well. Dostoevsky and the Ethics of Narrative Form traces Dostoevsky's indefatigable investigations into the ethical implications of his own formal choices. Drawing on his drafts, notebooks, and writings on aesthetics, Greta Matzner-Gore argues that he wove the moral and formal questions that obsessed him into the fabric of his last three novels: Demons, The Adolescent, and The Brothers Karamazov. In so doing, Dostoevsky anticipated some of the most pressing debates taking place in the study of narrative ethics today. Can reading novels make us more compassionate and sensitive to emotional nuance? Or is the act of reading, instead, a variety of voyeurism? By placing Dostoevsky in dialogue with thinkers such as Wayne Booth, Suzanne Keen, and Alex Woloch and providing a fresh assessment of Mikhail Bakhtin's Problems of Dostoevsky's Poetics, this book makes an important contribution not only to Dostoevsky studies but also to the field of narrative ethics.
Описание: This is an essential book for the student and general reader of Faulkner who may need guidance in identifying and interrelating the more than 1,2000 characters in Faulkner's novels, short stories and sketches. Even the experienced reader will find this work a valuable aid in making his way through the labyrinth of Faulkner's style and plots. He will benefit especially from seeing, almost at a glance, the interconnections between all of Faulkner's writings. The Guide is constructed as follows: The novels from Soldiers' Pay (1926) to The Reivers (1962) are listed by title in the order of their publication. Under each title all of the named characters who appear or are mentioned in that work are listed alphabetically, together with the number of every page on which the character's name occurs. A concise account of the actions of each character is given, together with a description of that character's salient personality features. The name under which a character is listed in the Guide is often supplied in brackets when a nickname, maiden name, or other variant is used in the sketches. Major characters in each novel are indicated by boldface type. Immediately following the section devoted to the novels appear the named characters in all of Faulkner's short stories and sketches, which are also treated in the order of their publication. Carryover characters who are handled inconsistently by Faulkner are marked with an asterisk and treated further by the authors in the Appendix. In addition, the authors have included genealogical charts of the Sartoris, Burden, and McCaslin-Beauchamp-Edmonds families, as well as a map of Yoknapatawpha County. Finally, an alphabetically arranged Master Index of characters lists every work in which their names occur. Specific bibliographical information concerning editions is given, together with other editions, American and British, with the same pagination. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1963.
