Описание: Designed by architects Jan Duiker and Bernard Bijvoet in 1925, the former Zonnestraal Sanatorium is an icon of the Nieuwe Bouwen style, the Dutch branch of the International Style of modernism: as one of the genuine highlights of twentieth-century architecture, it has been considered for the UNESCO World Heritage List. The complex, whose name means ray of sunshine, was originally created as a treatment center for tuberculosis patients. By the early 1960s, the buildings, which had been constructed for limited use in concrete, steel and glass, were in ruin. After four decades of research and planning, its restoration is nearing completion under the supervision of the architects Hubert-Jan Henket and Wessel de Jonge. This publication traces the former sanatorium's past, emphasizing the battle for recognition of the Zonnestraal site's importance, its complex restoration process and providing a critical dossier on the general management of modern monuments.

Описание: Tuberculosis, also known as consumption, the White Plague, or simply TB, was the number-one killer in the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Many physicians of the era advised their patients to chase the cure for tuberculosis in the Southwest, where the region's clean, dry, fresh air, high altitude, and sunshine offered relief for most and recovery for some. New Mexico, called the "well country," was particularly eager to promote itself as a mecca for lungers with the coming of the railroad to the territory in 1880 and the creation of many new hospitals, known as sanitariums or sanatoriums ("sans"), which specialized in the treatment of TB. This is a brief history of New Mexico's sans, their patients, and the doctors, nurses, and staff who served them during the golden age of the TB industry, from the turn of the 20th century to the eve of World War II.
Описание: From Wilmington, Fayetteville, Greenville, New Bern, Elizabeth City, Wilson, Kinston, Goldsboro, and many points in between, this book offers a brief look at many of the historical asylums and sanatoriums, as well as temporary hospitals of war and disaster, in Eastern North Carolina.
It shows what they were and what they became as they transformed into the great hospitals of today. Many of these old buildings have long since been torn down or reused in a variety of ways seldom connected to their past. This book provides a glimpse of these great buildings, several of their artifacts, and images of what health care used to be in Eastern North Carolina and the role medicine has played as the region has grown.
Описание: Excerpt from Hospitals and Sanatoriums of the Homoeopathic School of Medicine: With One Hundred and Ninety Nine Illustrations in the Text In our preliminary work of inspection many suggestions have been made to our Institutions as to what is necessary to be done on their part to place and keep them in the class above referred to. That these suggestions, in the majority of instances, will be carried out goes without saying, and after a sufficient interval to permit the working out of these changes a reinspection will promptly determine the proper grading of a given institution. Rare and vintage photographs depict the interesting and tragic history of the Essex Mountain Sanatorium.
Founded in 1907 amidst protests and a burgeoning suffrage movement, Essex Mountain Sanatorium was the result of two Montclair, New Jersey, women who successfully lobbied local government to establish a tuberculosis sanatorium in a then vacant cottage for wayward girls. From these humble beginnings, the hospital grew to become one of the finest treatment centers in the nation, expanding into a complex of 20 buildings that encompassed nearly 300 acres. Ironically, medical advances pioneered at places such as the sanatorium and the advent of antitubercular drugs in the years following World War II led to decreasing patient enrollment, which made such large facilities unnecessary. When it was eventually abandoned in the early 1980s, the hospital began its second act as a haven for urban explorers, vandals, and arsonists, becoming shrouded in mystery and the source of local legends and myths. After suffering years of neglect and abuse, the main complex would finally fall to wreckers in 1993, ending an important era in county, state, and national history.
