Описание: Complete with three case-studies, this highly practical book discusses useful bioindicators for sustainable coastal management, criteria for coastal area sensitivity to eutrophication and an approach that sets a biological value of coastal areas.
Описание: The development and ecology of coastal waters is an increasingly important topic and one which touches a wide range of areas including oceanography,
hydrology, biology, ecology, fisheries science, aquaculture, civil engineering, geography, economics, law and the social sciences. This book provides a balanced overview allowing the
reader to understand exactly what is at stake in the development and management of coastal waters. There is no other book currently available which provides such an overview of this
important area.Divided into three parts, the first part provides the background knowledge necessary for an understanding of the physical, chemical and biological phenomena of coastal
Part 2 looks at marine ecology from something other than the traditional view of placing organisms at the centre of the problem and considering them in relation to
other organisms and environments, instead the authors show how it is possible
ith marine ecosystems in which the biological, physical and chemical components are equally important when defining an entire system. Finally an exhaustive review of the available
technology for various types of development is provided. All in all, this book constitutes a succint and up-to-date summary of the functions of coastal ecosystems which should be read
by all those active in, and with an interest in, the management and development of coastal seas.

Описание: Presents the systematization and description of accumulated knowledge on oceanic fronts of the Norwegian, Greenland, Barents and Bering Seas. This book contains information on the oceanic fronts of the Subarctic Seas, a brief history of their investigation, and detailed description of the thermohaline structure of all frontal zones in this area.
Описание: Human experience has shown how great cities, nations, and empires have either collapsed or retired from their predominant stature when natural resources are depleted to an extent that exceeds the ability of the environment to restore or replenish their supply. This book explores the challenges facing coastal areas during the next few decades and the difficult decisions needed to prevent a repeat of the past. Establishing, maintaining or enhancing a sense of environmental security in different coastal regions and improving the management of critical infrastructure will require (i) matching human demands with available environmental resources; (ii) recognition of environmental security threats and infrastructure vulnerabilities; and, (iii) identification of the range of available options for preventing and/or minimizing natural disasters, technological failures, and/or terror actions. This book emphasizes beliefs that the convergence of seemingly disparate viewpoints and often uncertain and limited information is possible only by using one or more available risk assessment methodologies and decision-making tools such as multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA).

Описание: Flood catastrophes which happened world-wide have shown that it is not sufficient to characterize the hazard caused by the natural phenomenon flood with the well-known 3M-approach (measuring, mapping and modelling). Due to the recent shift in paradigms from a safety oriented approach to risk based planning it became necessary to consider the harmful impacts of hazards. The planning tasks changed from attempts to minimise hazards towards interventions to reduce exposure or susceptibility and nowadays to enhance the capacities to increase resilience. Scientific interest shifts more and more towards interdisciplinary approaches, which are needed to avoid disaster. This book deals with many aspects of flood risk management in a comprehensive way. As risks depend on hazard and vulnerabilities, not only geophysical tools for flood forecasting and planning are presented, but also socio-economic problems of flood management are discussed. Starting with precipitation and meteorological tools to its forecasting, hydrological models are described in their applications for operational flood forecasts, considering model uncertainties and their interactions with hydraulic and groundwater models. With regard to flood risk planning, regionalization aspects and the options to utilize historic floods are discussed. New hydrological tools for flood risk assessments for dams and reservoirs are presented. Problems and options to quantify socio-economic risks and how to consider them in multi-criteria assessments of flood risk planning are discussed. This book contributes to the contemporary efforts to reduce flood risk at the European scale. Using many real-world examples, it is useful for scientists and practitioners at different levels and with different interests.
Описание: Water is one of the most important resources of all , Businesses, communities, and ecosystems everywhere depend on clean freshwater to survive and prosper. When the same source of water is shared for economic, social and environmental causes it becomes the responsibility of every sector to develop a sustainable water strategy beneficial for all. Like agriculture and domestic use Industries also consume great amount of water which is generally sourced from the common environmental resource shared by the natural and thuman communityies. While utilising water corporates have a responsibility to understand the source of water, its quantum and vulnerability so that conflicts among different stakeholders can be avoided. While doing so the corporate managers will face many challenges coming out of resource assessment, water accounting, water sharing, water disclosure and compliance and different government statutes and law of the land. Corporations are now facing diverse water risks, including changing allotments, more stringent water-quality regulations, growing community interest and control over local resources, and increased public scrutiny of water-related activities. Another great challenge for the industries is the gradual decline of water resource in different part of the world due to increase in demand, change in landscape, climate change etc. The industries now should face not only the competition in resource sharing but also the impacts of climate change. The term efficient water use will be applied to those businesses which have minimised the water use and properly protected the source water, used technologies and water management system that minimises the water requirement and complies all necessary norms and statues regarding maintaining the water quality and quantity. Water stewardship implies that a corporate not only manages its own water but it also integrates different stakeholders in the management process and develops an integrated system where water sharing is equitable, careful, and sustainable. While dealing with challenges in water management corporate managers will encounter opportunities that will lead them in developing a sustainable water strategy. The aim of this book is to offer a water resource management plan for industries which is directly implementable and consistent with the Water Framework Directives of different countries with a special emphasis on developing countries. The contributor, who is a leading world expert in these fields, develops an integrated water resources management plan for the industries which is economically efficient, socially equitable and environmentally sustainable. The book offers explicit technical and investment solutions, socioeconomic and legal instruments and recommendations for institutional restructuring. The introductory chapter describes the water situation throughout the world and how the industries are sharing the resource and how conflicts are developing between industries and ecosystem. In the first chapter the author describes a hydro-ecological approach of water resource management. The modalities and methods of assessment of source water has been discussed in this chapter along with an introduction to the basic concepts for understanding of water resource. Chapter 2 introduces the case study area highlighting the particular pressures and impacts as well as the environmental functions and values of sustainable water resource management. Chapter 3 deals with corporate water strategy for water security. In this chapter water security has been defined as the availability of an acceptable quantity and quality of water for health, livelihoods, ecosystems and production, coupled with an acceptable level of water related risks to people, environments and economies. Water security has always been a societal priority — in its absence people and economies have remained vulnerable and poor. How the corporate should handle the emerging demands, social

Описание: A large part of the world s coastlines consists of sandy beaches and dunes that may undergo dramatic changes during storms. Extreme storm events in some cases dominate the erosion history of the coastline and may have dramatic impacts on densely populated coastal areas.
Описание: Water resource management is complicated in practice on account of the diverse nature of the resource and its many uses. This volume reports recent economic research on the theory, practice, and policy of water management. It is distinguished by the number and the range of the applications it considers. Chapters consider problems in the estimation of water demand in residential and agricultural contexts. Efficiency and externality considerations are considered in chapters concerning common aquifers as well as domestic conservation. Management policies are discussed in regard to chemical contamination, reservoir construction, and industrial regulation. The volume is intended for resource economists, especially those concerned with the management of water resources. It provides insights into the latest research on the economic issues concerning this important resource.
