Описание: Carpets of Afghanistan is without a doubt one of the most detailed analysis of Afghanistan rug production ever published. Author Richard Parsons, for many years a buyer in Afghanistan for the well-known firm O.C.M (London) Ltd, treats the reader not only to a veritable feast of carpets and rugs, all with their attendant tribal origins and motifs vividly explained, but also to a fascinating journey through the history of a diverse and colourful country. The author shares his respect and admiration for Afghanistan's stoic people, who, somehow, despite political upheavals, forced resettlement, a harsh climate and often primitive nomadic conditions, manage to fashion exquisite works of art which reflect their pride in their many-faceted heritage.
Afghan rugs, which are instantly appealing due to their traditional colours and bold designs, open up a whole vista for the collector, from sumptuous piled purdahs to flat woven prayer rugs, all of them well illustrated in the 154 colour and 90 black and white plates.
On completing his National Service in Egypt, Richard Parsons spent some time with the Colonial Service, before joining a mining finance house and working for several years in West Africa. He was then posted to Tehran where he fell in love with Oriental carpets. On completion of his assignment in Iran and faced with the prospect of a London office, he abandoned his career for the carpet trade to the consternation of family and friends. He subsequently joined the prestigious firm of Oriental Carpet Wholesalers in the UK, whose agents buy from all over the carpet-making world for sale in the UK and redistribution throughout the world. After training at the London warehouse and in Iran, he was sent to Afghanistan as assistant buyer. He soon took over full responsibilities staying on in Afghanistan until 1979 when it was occupied by the Soviet Union. He then went as a buyer to Pakistan where he lived and worked until 1981, before moving to Hong Kong. His knowledge and love of Afghan rugs has prompted him to devote a great deal of time researching, writing and recording for posterity the details of rug production and tribal history in that remote but beautiful country. Richard Parsons died in February, 2002.

Описание: Since the attack on the World Trade Center, Afghanistan has evolved from a country few people thought twice about to a place that evokes our deepest emotions. Time magazine photographer Robert Nickelsberg has been publishing his images of this distant yet all too familiar country since 1998, when he accompanied a group of mujahedeen across the border from Pakistan. This remarkable volume of photographs is accompanied by insightful texts from experts on Afghanistan and the Taliban. The images themselves are captioned with places, dates, and Nickelsberg's own extensive commentary. Timely and important, the book serves as a reminder that Afghanistan and the rest of the world remain inextricably linked, no matter how much we long to distance ourselves from its painful realities.

Описание: While the modern nation can trace its origins back to 1747, the history of Afghanistan is far more ancient. It has long been an ancient focal point of the Silk Road and human migration. While many native peoples such as the Kushans, Samanids, Saffarids and Mughals have founded their empires here, the country has also been the target of numerous invasions. Afghanistan is therefore one of the most culturally rich and diverse places on Earth. This lively book places this rich and ancient seam of creativity in its broad historical context and offers the reader a full appreciation of this remarkable country.

Описание: Afghanistan's 14-year-long civil war erupted in 1978 and ended in the disintegration of a state that was first hyperarmed by the superpowers and then
abandoned by them. This text analyzes the part played by international politics in this debacle, discussing how changing patterns of strategic conflict and co-operation have affected
international negotiations over Afghanistan from the period of the civil war to the present. Drawing on interviews with officials of the United Nations and of various governments, Barnett
Rubin recounts the ultimate failure of the Geneva Accords of 1988 to deal effectively with the Afghans' domestic conflict and to establish US-Soviet co-operation in rebuilding
Afghanistan.
When the Cold War ended and USSR disintegrated, Afghanistan lost its strategic significance, notes Rubin. The people of this impoverished land were left to
fight over their future with sophisticated weapons and little other outside assistance. Integrating theories of international relations and domestic politics, Rubin analyzes how buffer
states are formed through international co-operation, and how this leads to both specific patterns of state formation and particular problems of regime change.

Описание: An examination of Afghan society in conflict, from the 1978 communist coup to the fall of Najibullah, the last Soviet-installed president, in 1992. This edition,
revised by the author, reflects developments since then and includes material on the Taliban and Osama bin Laden. Drawing on two decades of research, Barnett Rubin provides an
account of the nature of the old regime, the rise and fall of the People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan, and the troubled Mujahidin resistance.
He relates all these
phenomena to international actors, showing how the interaction of US policy and Pakistani and Saudi Arabian interests has helped to create the challenges of today. Rubin puts into
context the continuing turmoil in Afghanistan and seeks to offer readers a coherent historical explanation for the country's social and political fragmentation.
