Описание: The Bolivian revolution in 1952 aimed at modernizing the country: the revolutionaries nationalized the large tin mines, limited the power of the upper classes, proceeded to the agrarian reform, and tried to strengthen the role of the state in the economic life. Because the success of the revolution was limited, it is necessary to discuss the economic instruments, which a country may use to limit its backwardness. The second important point, which makes the 1952 revolution interesting is the alliance of the intellectuals and the workers, an alliance which can also be observed in the Polish «Solidarity» movement at the end of the 20th century.

Описание: Reaching into the depths of the collective unconscious, A Sense of Apocalypse explores and re-interprets one of the West’s primordial fears, namely that of the apocalyptic closure of both cultural praxis and individual experience. Yet, in contrast to popular connotations of the term, apocalypse is viewed here in terms of a transitional narrative locating the subject at the intersection of technological determinism, pop-cultural imagination, postmodern urbanism and digital textuality. All these form the components of a new post-apocalyptic landscape, which not only produces a new identity informed by dissolving post-Enlightenment paradigms, but also conjures up hints at a large number of existential possibilities triggered by late-capitalist technologies and their cultural consequences.

Описание: Wroclaw is one of the oldest cities in Poland with a long and turbulent history that is manifest on every corner. Throughout the ages, the city has been passed from hand to hand in many different circumstances. The city has belonged to the Poles, the Czechs, the Hungarians and the Germans.
Although almost seventy percent of its urban fabric was destroyed in the Second World War, Wroclaw managed to rise from the ruins and now boasts many an architectural monument. The city currently features nearly eight thousand tenements - one of the largest complexes of this type found in Poland and, furthermore, in Europe. The oldest tenements originated in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and are surrounded by Baroque, Classicist, Art Nouveau and modernist architecture.
This publication comprises a compelling selection of more than 150 buildings - from avant-garde residential blocks dating from the sixties and seventies via the Centennial Hall - recognised by the American Getty Foundation as one of the ten most important examples of twentieth century modernism - to modern buildings and the Ozeaneum in the Zoo.

Описание: The first monograph of the life and ?uvre of Marcin Mielczewski (d. 1651) presents the best known Polish composer of seventeenth-century Europe. During the 1990s, while exploring a newly accessible collection of music manuscripts from Silesia (the Sammlung Bohn) held in the Berlin Staatsbibliothek, the author found 37 compositions signed M.M., which she ascribed to Mielczewski. This discovery, representing more than half the composer’s known legacy, fuelled a considerable rise in interest in Mielczewski’s output among musicologists and musicians. In this book, the current state of knowledge about Marcin Mielczewski’s life and work is presented within the context of the musical patronage of King Ladislaus IV Vasa of Poland and his brother, Bishop Charles Ferdinand.
